  • Use password reset if the service offers it; resetting the password often clears the lock.

Steps

Goal: Clear the lock so you can log in—wait, reset password, or contact IT.

  • Do not keep trying to log in. Wait 15 minutes to 1 hour, or use password reset.
  • Good: The lock clears and you can log in with the correct password.
  • Bad: The lock persists—try password reset or contact IT.

Wait for lockout

Goal: Let the lockout period expire before trying again.

  • Most services clear the lock automatically after 15 minutes to 1 hour.
  • Do not attempt to log in during this time—more attempts can extend the lock.
  • Good: After the wait, you can log in with the correct password.
  • Bad: The lock is longer than expected—try password reset or contact IT.

Password reset

Goal: Use password reset to clear the lock and regain access.

  • Go to “Forgot password” or “Reset password” on the login page.
  • Complete verification (email or phone) and set a new password.
  • Good: The reset completes and you can log in.
  • Bad: Verification fails or the service does not offer reset—contact IT for work accounts.

When to get help

Contact your IT admin or the service support if:

  • The lock does not clear after the usual wait (e.g. 1 hour).
  • Password reset does not work or you cannot verify your identity.
  • You have a work or school account and need an admin to clear the lock.

Verification

  • You can log in with your username and password.
  • No “too many attempts” or “account locked” message.
  • You can access your usual apps and services.

Frequently asked questions

Why does "too many attempts" happen?
Services lock accounts after several failed logins (often 5–10) to prevent brute-force attacks. The lock is temporary in most cases.
How long does the lockout last?
Usually 15 minutes to 1 hour for personal accounts. Work and school accounts may have longer lockouts or require an admin to clear the lock.
Will trying again clear the lock?
No. More attempts can extend the lock. Wait for the lockout period or use password reset.
