Steps

Goal: Add an exclusion, restore from quarantine, or allow the app so it runs.

  • Check if the app was quarantined. If yes, restore it first.
  • Good: Restored. Proceed to Add exclusion.
  • Bad: Not quarantined. Proceed to Add exclusion.

Add exclusion

Goal: Exclude the app from antivirus scanning.

  • Windows Defender: Virus & threat protection, Exclusions, add the app .exe or folder. Third-party: find Exclusions or Allow list in settings.
  • Good: Exclusion added. Proceed to Verification.
  • Bad: Settings grayed out. Proceed to When to get help.

Restore

Goal: Restore the app from quarantine.

  • Defender: Protection history, find item, Actions, Restore. Third-party: open quarantine, restore.
  • Good: Restored. Add exclusion. Proceed to Verification.

When to get help

If Exclusions or settings are grayed out, the antivirus may be managed by IT. Contact your IT admin with the app name and path.

Verification

  • The app runs without being blocked.
  • The app is in the exclusion or allow list.
  • Real-time protection is back on (if you turned it off to test).

Escalation ladder

Work from the device outward. Stop when the problem is fixed.

  1. Add exclusion Add app or folder to exclusion list.
  2. Restore Restore from Protection history or quarantine.
  3. Test with protection off Temporarily disable to confirm, then add exclusion and re-enable.
  4. Contact IT Managed antivirus or grayed out settings.

Was the app quarantined?

Protection history (Defender) or quarantine list (third-party) shows quarantined items.

Check the antivirus notification or Protection history. Quarantined: Restore the item, then add exclusion. Not quarantined: add exclusion for the app path.

Restore from quarantine

Defender: Protection history, find item, Actions, Restore. Third-party: open quarantine, restore the file. Then add an exclusion so it does not block again.

Can you add exclusions?

If settings are grayed out, the antivirus may be managed by IT.

Defender: Virus & threat protection, Exclusions, add app or folder. Third-party: find Exclusions or Allow list in settings. Good: exclusion added—app runs. Bad: settings grayed out—contact IT.

Exclusion added

Add the app .exe or folder to the exclusion list. Run the app. It should work. If not, add the folder instead of just the .exe.

Contact IT

Contact your IT admin. Provide the app name and path. They can add the exclusion or restore the quarantined item.
