Steps
Goal: Rule out extensions, try hardware acceleration, reset the profile, or reinstall.
- Note when the crash happens: on startup, when opening a specific site, or after a few minutes.
- Good: You can reproduce the crash. Proceed to Disable extensions.
- Bad: The computer freezes entirely—different problem (hardware, drivers). See When to get help.
Disable extensions
Goal: Isolate a bad extension that causes crashes.
- Chrome: open chrome://extensions. Firefox: about:addons. Edge: edge://extensions.
- Turn off half of your extensions, restart the browser, and test. If crashes stop, re-enable and narrow down.
- Remove the extension that causes the crash.
- Good: Crashes stopped after disabling one extension. Remove it.
- Bad: No extensions or disabling did not help. Proceed to Toggle hardware acceleration.
Toggle hardware acceleration
Goal: Fix crashes caused by GPU or driver issues.
- Chrome: chrome://settings/system, turn off “Use hardware acceleration when available.” Edge: edge://settings/system, same toggle.
- Firefox: about:preferences, search “hardware acceleration,” uncheck “Use recommended performance settings” and disable it.
- Restart the browser. If crashes persist, turn it back on—some systems need it.
- Good: Crashes stopped. Keep the setting that works.
- Bad: Still crashes. Proceed to Reset the profile.
Reset profile
Goal: Clear corrupted settings with a profile reset.
- Chrome: chrome://settings/reset, “Restore settings to their original defaults.” Edge: edge://settings/reset.
- Firefox: about:support, “Refresh Firefox.” Export bookmarks first—Firefox Refresh removes them.
- This removes extensions, themes, and custom settings. Test for crashes.
- Good: Crashes stopped. Reinstall extensions one by one if needed.
- Bad: Still crashes. Proceed to Reinstall the browser.
Reinstall
Goal: Fresh install when reset did not help.
- Uninstall from Windows Settings or Control Panel. Delete the profile folder if you want a clean slate.
- Reinstall from the official site (google.com/chrome, mozilla.org/firefox, microsoft.com/edge).
- Restore bookmarks from backup or sync.
- Good: Fresh install, no crashes.
- Bad: Still crashes. Update graphics drivers. Consider hardware diagnostics.
When to get help
If the browser crashes on all sites, on multiple browsers, or the computer freezes—hardware or driver issues may be the cause. Update graphics drivers from the manufacturer (NVIDIA, AMD, Intel). If crashes persist after a clean reinstall and driver update, consider a technician for hardware diagnostics.
Verification
- The browser starts and stays open without closing unexpectedly.
- No crash reporter or “Restore pages” dialog on relaunch.
- Pages load and scroll normally; no freezing.
Escalation ladder
Work from the device outward. Stop when the problem is fixed.
- Disable extensions Turn off extensions one by one; a bad extension often causes crashes.
- Toggle hardware acceleration Turn off (or on) hardware acceleration; GPU issues can trigger crashes.
- Reset profile Reset the browser to clear corrupted settings; removes extensions and customizations.
- Reinstall Uninstall, delete profile folder, reinstall from official site.
- Get help Update graphics drivers; if crashes persist, consider hardware diagnostics.
What to capture if you need help
Before calling support or posting for help, have these ready. It speeds everything up.
- When the crash happens (startup, specific site, after time)
- Extensions installed
- Whether safe mode stops crashes
- Steps already tried

Frequently asked questions
- Why does my browser keep crashing?
- Extensions, corrupted profile data, or hardware acceleration conflicts. Disable extensions first, then try turning hardware acceleration off. If that fails, reset the profile or reinstall.
- Will resetting my browser delete my bookmarks?
- Chrome and Edge: sign in to sync and bookmarks will restore. Firefox: export bookmarks before reset, or use Firefox Sync. Always back up bookmarks before a profile reset.
- When should I reinstall the browser?
- If disabling extensions, toggling hardware acceleration, and resetting the profile do not stop the crashes. Reinstall as a last resort after backing up bookmarks.
