Steps

Goal: Isolate the cause—incognito, extensions, cache, DNS, or network—and fix it.

Try incognito

Goal: Rule out extensions and cache with a clean profile.

  • Chrome: Ctrl+Shift+N (Windows) or Cmd+Shift+N (Mac). Firefox: Ctrl+Shift+P (Windows) or Cmd+Shift+P (Mac). Safari: File → New Private Window. Edge: Ctrl+Shift+N.
  • Go to the site. If it loads, an extension or cached data in your normal profile is the cause.
  • Good: Site loads. Proceed to Disable extensions to find which one.
  • Bad: Site still fails. Proceed to Check DNS and hosts.

Disable extensions

Goal: Find which extension blocks or breaks the site.

  • Chrome: More tools → Extensions (or chrome://extensions). Firefox: about:addons. Safari: Preferences → Extensions. Edge: Extensions.
  • Disable extensions one by one. After each, reload the site. When it loads, the last disabled extension is the cause.
  • Good: Site loads with one extension disabled. Keep it disabled or find an alternative.
  • Bad: All disabled and still fails. Proceed to Clear cache and cookies.

Clear cache and cookies

Goal: Remove stale or corrupted cache and cookies that prevent loading.

  • Chrome: Settings → Privacy and security → Clear browsing data. Select Cached images and files, and Cookies (if needed). Choose time range or “All time” for the site.
  • Firefox: Settings → Privacy & Security → Cookies and Site Data → Clear Data. Select Cached Web Content and Cookies.
  • Safari: Develop → Empty Caches (enable Develop in Preferences → Advanced first). For cookies: Preferences → Privacy → Manage Website Data.
  • Good: Site loads after clearing. The cache or cookies were the cause.
  • Bad: Still fails. Proceed to Check other browser and device.

Check other browser and device

Goal: Isolate browser vs network.

  • Open the site in a different browser (Chrome, Firefox, Edge, Safari). Try on your phone (Wi‑Fi or cellular).
  • Good: Site loads in another browser or device—the original browser has a profile issue. Reset it or use the working one.
  • Bad: Fails everywhere—check DNS and hosts, or the site may be down.

Check DNS and hosts

Goal: Rule out DNS cache or hosts file blocking the site.

  • Run ping example.com or nslookup example.com. If the IP is 127.0.0.1, the hosts file blocks it—see fix-hosts-file-blocks-site. If the IP is wrong or missing, see fix-dns-cache-is-wrong.
  • Good: You fix DNS or hosts and the site loads.
  • Bad: DNS looks correct—the site may be down or your network may block it. Contact your ISP or the site operator.

When to get help

Contact your ISP or the site operator if:

  • The site fails in incognito, all browsers, and on another device.
  • DNS and hosts look correct but the site still does not load.
  • You see a specific error (e.g. certificate, timeout) that suggests a network or server issue.

Verification

  • The site loads in the browser (normal or incognito).
  • No error message or blank page.
  • If an extension was the cause, it remains disabled or you use an alternative.

Escalation ladder

Work from the device outward. Stop when the problem is fixed.

  1. Try incognito Open incognito/private window, load site.
  2. Disable extensions Turn off extensions one by one, reload.
  3. Clear cache and cookies Clear for the site or globally.
  4. Check other browser and device Isolate browser vs network.
  5. Check DNS and hosts fix-dns-cache-is-wrong, fix-hosts-file-blocks-site.
  6. Call support Site down or network block—ISP or site operator.

What to capture if you need help

Before calling support or posting for help, have these ready. It speeds everything up.

  • Browser and version
  • Site URL and error message
  • Does it load in incognito?
  • Extensions installed
  • Steps already tried

Does the site load in incognito or private mode?

Incognito rules out extensions and most cache issues.

Open incognito (Chrome) or private (Firefox, Safari, Edge). Go to the site. Good: site loads—the issue is in your normal profile (extensions or cache). Bad: site still fails—check DNS, hosts, or network.

You can change your answer later.

Disable extensions and retest

Extensions can block or break sites.

Chrome: More tools → Extensions. Firefox: about:addons. Disable extensions one by one and reload the site. Good: site loads after disabling one—that extension is the cause. Bad: all disabled and still fails—clear cache and cookies.

You can change your answer later.

Clear cache and cookies

Stale or corrupted cache can prevent loading.

Chrome: Settings → Privacy → Clear browsing data. Firefox: Settings → Privacy → Clear Data. Select cache and cookies (or site-specific). Reload the site. Good: site loads. Bad: still fails—try another browser or device.

You can change your answer later.

Does the site load in another browser or device?

Isolates browser vs network.

Try a different browser (Chrome, Firefox, Edge) or another device (phone, another PC). Good: loads elsewhere—reset the failing browser. Bad: fails everywhere—check DNS and hosts.

You can change your answer later.

Reset browser or use working browser

Chrome: Settings → Reset settings. Firefox: about:support → Refresh Firefox. Or use the browser/device where it works.

Does ping or nslookup show a blocking IP?

Hosts file or DNS cache may block the site.

Run `ping example.com` or `nslookup example.com`. If 127.0.0.1—hosts file. If wrong or no IP—DNS cache. See fix-hosts-file-blocks-site and fix-dns-cache-is-wrong. Good: you fix DNS/hosts and site loads. Bad: DNS looks correct—site may be down or network blocks it; call support.

You can change your answer later.

Fix hosts file or DNS cache

Follow fix-hosts-file-blocks-site or fix-dns-cache-is-wrong. Then retest the site in the browser.

Call support

If the site fails in incognito, all browsers, and on another device, and DNS looks correct, the site may be down or your network may block it. Contact your ISP or the site operator.

Site loads

The browser now loads the site. Keep the blocking extension disabled or find an alternative if needed.

Frequently asked questions

Why would a browser not load a site?
Extensions (ad blockers, privacy tools), corrupted cache or cookies, DNS or hosts file overrides, or network issues. Incognito and disabling extensions often fix it.
Does incognito fix loading issues?
Incognito uses a clean profile—no extensions (unless allowed), no cached data for that session. If the site loads in incognito, an extension or cache in your normal profile is likely the cause.
When should I clear cache vs cookies?
Clear cache for stale or broken content. Clear cookies if the site has login or session issues. For "will not load," try cache first; if the site loads but is broken, try cookies.
