Fix a car convertible top that will not go down
We'll check the latches, switch, and fuse—or tell you when to call a mechanic for motor or hydraulic repair.
What you'll need
- Fuse puller or needle-nose pliers
- Replacement fuse (same amperage)
- Hydraulic fluid (if your top is hydraulic—per vehicle spec)
- Owner's manual

Steps
Goal: Confirm the symptom, rule out latches and switch, then check the motor or hydraulic system.
- Ensure the car is stopped and the parking brake is on. Release the front latches. Press the switch to lower the top.
- Good: The top does not move—proceed to Check latches and switch.
- Bad: The top works—no fault.
Check latches and switch
Goal: Rule out latches, faulty switch, or blown fuse.
- Confirm both front latches are released. The top must be unlatched from the windshield header before it can lower.
- Confirm the switch responds when pressed. Listen for a hum or click from the motor or pump.
- Check the fuse for the convertible top. Replace if blown with the same amperage.
- Good: Latches released, switch works, fuse intact. Proceed to Motor and hydraulic.
- Bad: Latches engaged or fuse blown—release latches or replace fuse and retest.
Motor and hydraulic
Goal: Check for obstructions, hydraulic fluid, and motor operation.
- Clear obstructions from the top mechanism and tonneau cover. If your top is hydraulic, check the hydraulic pump fluid level—add if low.
- Press the switch and listen for the motor or pump. If you hear it but the top does not move, the mechanism may be jammed or broken.
- Many tops have a manual override—check your owner’s manual. Use it only when necessary, then have the system checked by a mechanic.
- Good: Obstructions cleared, fluid OK, top moves. If the motor runs but the top is stuck, call a mechanic.
- Bad: Motor or hydraulic pump has failed—call a mechanic.
When to get help
Call a mechanic if:
- The latches, switch, and fuse are good but the top still does not move.
- The motor runs but the top is stuck (mechanism fault).
- You are not comfortable with hydraulic or motor work.
Verification
- The top lowers and raises smoothly when you press the switch.
- The latches release and engage correctly.
- No straining or grinding when the top moves.
Escalation ladder
Work from the device outward. Stop when the problem is fixed.
- Confirm symptom Verify the top does not move; check latches.
- Switch and fuse Check the convertible top switch and fuse.
- Obstruction Clear obstructions; check hydraulic fluid if applicable.
- Motor and hydraulic Listen for motor; check for mechanical fault.
- Call a pro Motor or hydraulic repair—call a mechanic.
What to capture if you need help
Before calling support or posting for help, have these ready. It speeds everything up.
- Whether the latches are released
- Whether you hear the motor or pump when pressing the switch
- Fuse condition
- Hydraulic fluid level (if applicable)
- Steps already tried
Does the top fail to move when you press the switch?
Ensure the car is stopped and the parking brake is on. Release the front latches.
You can change your answer later.
