Steps

Goal: Confirm the symptom, rule out the switch and fuse, then isolate the mirror motor or wiring fault.

  • Sit in the driver seat and operate the mirror switch. Try both left and right mirrors and all directions.
  • Good: One or both mirrors do not move—proceed to Check switch and fuse.
  • Bad: Both mirrors work—no fault.

Check switch and fuse

Goal: Rule out a faulty switch or blown fuse.

  • Confirm the mirror selector is set to the correct side (L or R). Operate the switch in all directions. Listen for a click or hum.
  • Locate the fuse box and check the power mirror fuse. Replace if blown with the same amperage.
  • Good: Switch works and fuse is intact. Proceed to Mirror motor and wiring.
  • Bad: Fuse blown or switch faulty—replace and retest. If the fuse blows again, call a mechanic.

Mirror motor and wiring

Goal: Check for obstructions, then test the motor and wiring.

  • Check that the mirror is not frozen, stuck with dirt, or physically damaged. Thaw or clean as needed. Do not force.
  • If the switch and fuse are good, the mirror motor or wiring may have failed. Testing requires door panel removal and a multimeter or direct motor test.
  • If the motor runs when powered directly, the mirror switch or wiring is faulty. If the motor does not run, replace the mirror assembly or call a mechanic.
  • Good: You found and fixed the fault. The mirror adjusts in all directions.
  • Bad: Motor has failed or wiring is damaged—call a mechanic.

When to get help

Call a mechanic if:

  • The switch and fuse are good but the mirror still does not move.
  • The fuse blows repeatedly (possible short).
  • You are not comfortable removing the door panel or testing wiring.

Verification

  • The mirror moves in all directions when you operate the switch.
  • The fuse is intact and the switch responds correctly.
  • No unusual noises or binding when the mirror moves.

Escalation ladder

Work from the device outward. Stop when the problem is fixed.

  1. Confirm symptom Verify which mirror or direction fails.
  2. Switch and fuse Check the mirror switch and fuse.
  3. Obstruction Confirm the mirror is not stuck or frozen.
  4. Motor and wiring Test the mirror motor and wiring.
  5. Call a pro Motor replacement or wiring repair—call a mechanic.

What to capture if you need help

Before calling support or posting for help, have these ready. It speeds everything up.

  • Which mirror fails (left, right, or both)
  • Which direction fails (up, down, left, right)
  • Fuse condition
  • Steps already tried

Does the mirror fail to move in any direction?

Operate the mirror switch. Try both mirrors and all directions.

Sit in the driver seat. Operate the mirror switch for both left and right mirrors and all directions. Good: one or both mirrors do not move—proceed. Bad: both mirrors work—no fault.

You can change your answer later.

No action needed

Both mirrors work. No further action.

Is the switch and fuse good?

Check the mirror switch and the power mirror fuse.

Confirm the mirror selector is on the correct side. Operate the switch in all directions. Check the fuse for power mirrors—replace if blown. Good: switch works and fuse is intact. Bad: fuse blown or switch faulty—replace and retest.

You can change your answer later.

Replace switch or fuse and retest

Replace the blown fuse with the same amperage. If the switch is faulty, replace it. Retest. If the fuse blows again, there may be a short—call a mechanic.

Is the mirror stuck or obstructed?

Ice, dirt, or damage can prevent the mirror from moving.

Check for ice, dirt, or physical damage. Gently try to move the mirror by hand if possible. Thaw or clean as needed. Do not force. Good: mirror moves freely. Bad: still stuck—motor or mechanism may be faulty.

You can change your answer later.

Clear obstruction and retest

Thaw if frozen. Clean debris. Retest the mirror. If it still does not move, the motor may have failed—call a mechanic.

Does the motor run when tested?

The mirror motor may have failed. Testing requires door panel removal.

If you can access the motor, test it with 12 V. If the motor runs, the switch or wiring is faulty. If the motor does not run, it has failed—replace the mirror assembly or call a mechanic.

You can change your answer later.

Check wiring and switch

If the motor runs when powered directly, the fault is the switch or wiring. Replace the switch or repair the wiring. Call a mechanic if you are not comfortable.

Call a mechanic

Call a mechanic if the motor has failed, the fuse blows repeatedly, or you are not comfortable with door panel removal or wiring. Mirror motor replacement often requires replacing the entire mirror assembly.
