Steps

Goal: Confirm the symptom, rule out the fuse, then isolate the motor, switch, or mechanism fault.

  • Press the recline switch on the side of the seat.
  • Good: The seat does not move—proceed to Check fuse.
  • Bad: The seat moves—no problem.

Check fuse

Goal: Rule out a blown power seat fuse.

  • Locate the fuse box (under the dash or in the engine bay). Check your owner’s manual for the power seat fuse.
  • Pull the fuse and inspect. Replace if blown. If the new fuse blows when you run the seat, there is a short—call a mechanic.
  • Good: Fuse is good. Proceed to Test the motor.
  • Bad: Fuse blown—replace and test.

Test the motor

Goal: Confirm whether the seat motor runs.

  • Press the recline switch and put your ear near the seat. Listen for a hum from the seat motor.
  • If you hear nothing, the motor may have failed or it is not receiving power. Check the switch and wiring.
  • If you hear a sound but the seat does not move, check for obstructions (coins, debris under the seat). Remove and test. If still no movement, the mechanism may be broken—call a mechanic.
  • Good: You hear the motor and the seat moves—fault may be intermittent.
  • Bad: No sound or sound but no movement—motor or mechanism fault.

Switch and wiring

Goal: Check the seat switch and wiring when the motor gets no power.

  • Try the recline switch and other seat functions (forward, back, height). If one works and recline does not, the recline switch may have failed.
  • Inspect the wiring under the seat or in the door jamb for chafed or broken wires.
  • Good: You find and fix the fault. The seat works.
  • Bad: No switch works or wiring is damaged—call a mechanic.

When to get help

Call a mechanic if:

  • The fuse blows again after replacement.
  • The seat motor or recline mechanism has failed and you are not comfortable with seat removal.
  • The wiring is damaged.

Seat work can involve airbag wiring. Disconnect the battery and wait 10 minutes before working.

Verification

  • The seat reclines when you press the recline switch.
  • The seat holds its position when you release the switch.
  • The fuse stays intact when running the seat repeatedly.

Escalation ladder

Work from the device outward. Stop when the problem is fixed.

  1. Confirm symptom Verify the seat does not recline when you press the switch.
  2. Fuse Check and replace the power seat fuse if blown.
  3. Motor and switch Listen for the motor; check which switch works.
  4. Mechanism Check for obstructions; inspect the recline mechanism.
  5. Call a pro Motor or mechanism replacement—call a mechanic.

What to capture if you need help

Before calling support or posting for help, have these ready. It speeds everything up.

  • Which seat will not recline
  • Fuse condition (blown or good)
  • Whether you hear the motor when pressing the switch
  • Steps already tried

Does the seat not recline when you press the switch?

Press the recline switch on the side of the seat. Note whether you hear a hum.

Press the recline switch. Good: seat does not move—proceed to fuse. Bad: seat moves—no problem.

You can change your answer later.

No action needed

The seat works. No further action.

Is the power seat fuse blown?

A blown fuse can affect all power seat functions. Check the fuse box.

Locate the power seat fuse. Pull and inspect. Blown: replace with same amperage, test. If it blows again, call a mechanic. Good: proceed to motor.

You can change your answer later.

Replace fuse and test

Replace the fuse. Test the seat. If it works, done. If the fuse blows again, there is a short—call a mechanic.

Do you hear the seat motor when you press the switch?

Put your ear near the seat. The motor makes a hum when it receives power.

Press the recline switch and listen. No sound: motor may have failed or no power. Sound but no movement: mechanism may be stuck or broken. Sound and movement: seat may be at limit—check track.

You can change your answer later.

Does the seat move when the motor runs?

If the motor runs but the seat does not move, the mechanism may be stuck or broken.

If you hear the motor but the seat does not move, check for obstructions (coins, debris). Remove and test. If still no movement, the seat motor or mechanism may be broken. Seat removal required—call a mechanic if you are not comfortable.

You can change your answer later.

Replace motor or mechanism or call a mechanic

The seat motor or recline mechanism has failed. Replacement requires seat removal. Call a mechanic if you are not comfortable. Disconnect the battery before working—seat work can involve airbag wiring.

Do other seat functions work?

Try forward, back, height, and recline. If one works and recline does not, the recline switch may have failed.

Try each seat function. One works: the recline switch or its circuit may have failed. None work: fault may be fuse or wiring. Inspect door jamb or under-seat wiring.

You can change your answer later.

Replace switch or call a mechanic

The recline switch may need replacement. Seat work may be required—call a mechanic if you are not comfortable.

Call a mechanic

Call a mechanic if the fuse blows again, no seat functions work, the motor has failed, or the wiring is damaged.
