Steps
Goal: Confirm the symptom, rule out the fuse, then isolate the motor, switch, or mechanism fault.
- Press the recline switch on the side of the seat.
- Good: The seat does not move—proceed to Check fuse.
- Bad: The seat moves—no problem.
Check fuse
Goal: Rule out a blown power seat fuse.
- Locate the fuse box (under the dash or in the engine bay). Check your owner’s manual for the power seat fuse.
- Pull the fuse and inspect. Replace if blown. If the new fuse blows when you run the seat, there is a short—call a mechanic.
- Good: Fuse is good. Proceed to Test the motor.
- Bad: Fuse blown—replace and test.
Test the motor
Goal: Confirm whether the seat motor runs.
- Press the recline switch and put your ear near the seat. Listen for a hum from the seat motor.
- If you hear nothing, the motor may have failed or it is not receiving power. Check the switch and wiring.
- If you hear a sound but the seat does not move, check for obstructions (coins, debris under the seat). Remove and test. If still no movement, the mechanism may be broken—call a mechanic.
- Good: You hear the motor and the seat moves—fault may be intermittent.
- Bad: No sound or sound but no movement—motor or mechanism fault.
Switch and wiring
Goal: Check the seat switch and wiring when the motor gets no power.
- Try the recline switch and other seat functions (forward, back, height). If one works and recline does not, the recline switch may have failed.
- Inspect the wiring under the seat or in the door jamb for chafed or broken wires.
- Good: You find and fix the fault. The seat works.
- Bad: No switch works or wiring is damaged—call a mechanic.
When to get help
Call a mechanic if:
- The fuse blows again after replacement.
- The seat motor or recline mechanism has failed and you are not comfortable with seat removal.
- The wiring is damaged.
Seat work can involve airbag wiring. Disconnect the battery and wait 10 minutes before working.
Verification
- The seat reclines when you press the recline switch.
- The seat holds its position when you release the switch.
- The fuse stays intact when running the seat repeatedly.
Escalation ladder
Work from the device outward. Stop when the problem is fixed.
- Confirm symptom Verify the seat does not recline when you press the switch.
- Fuse Check and replace the power seat fuse if blown.
- Motor and switch Listen for the motor; check which switch works.
- Mechanism Check for obstructions; inspect the recline mechanism.
- Call a pro Motor or mechanism replacement—call a mechanic.
