Steps

Goal: Clear the hose, empty the tank, check the filter, and inspect the pump.

Tank and hose

Goal: Rule out full tank and clogged hose or wand.

  • Empty the recovery tank if full. Confirm the tank is seated correctly and the seal is intact.
  • Disconnect the hose from the wand and the unit. Look through the hose for debris, hair, or clogs. Clear the wand and nozzle with a brush or pin.
  • You should see a clear path through the hose and wand. Reconnect and retry.

Filter and seal

Goal: Rule out dirty filter and bad tank seal.

  • Locate the filter—often in the tank lid or near the pump. Remove and rinse it, or replace if damaged. Let it dry before reinstalling if the manual requires it.
  • Check the seal between the tank and the unit. Replace if cracked or missing. Confirm the tank clicks into place.
  • Good: Filter clean, seal intact—retest suction.
  • Bad: Filter was dirty—clean it and retry.

Pump

Goal: Confirm the pump runs and there are no air leaks.

  • When the unit runs, you should hear the pump pulling air. If the motor runs but there is no suction sound, the pump may have failed.
  • Check all hose connections for cracks or loose fittings. A leak anywhere in the suction path reduces suction.
  • Good: Pump runs, connections tight—suction restored.
  • Bad: Pump does not run or makes grinding noise—call a pro.

When to get help

Call a technician if:

  • You have cleared clogs, cleaned the filter, and emptied the tank and it still does not suction.
  • The pump makes grinding or unusual noise.
  • You are not comfortable opening the unit to inspect the pump.

Verification

  • Recovery tank is empty and seated correctly.
  • Hose and wand are clear of clogs.
  • Filter is clean and dry.
  • Tank seal is intact.
  • Pump runs and suction is strong when the unit is on.

Escalation ladder

Work from the device outward. Stop when the problem is fixed.

  1. Tank and hose Empty the recovery tank and clear the hose and wand for clogs.
  2. Filter and seal Clean or replace the filter; check the tank seal.
  3. Pump Confirm the pump runs and there are no air leaks.
  4. Call a pro Clogs cleared, filter clean, tank empty—still no suction; or pump makes unusual noise—call a technician.

What to capture if you need help

Before calling support or posting for help, have these ready. It speeds everything up.

  • Whether the recovery tank was full
  • Whether the hose and wand were clogged
  • Filter condition
  • Whether the pump runs
  • Steps already tried

Is the recovery tank full?

A full tank blocks suction. Empty it first.

Check the recovery tank level. If full, empty it. Confirm the tank is seated correctly. Good: tank empty or low. Bad: tank was full—empty it and retry.

You can change your answer later.

Empty tank and retry

Empty the recovery tank. Confirm the seal is intact. Reinstall and retry. If it still does not suction, proceed to clear the hose.

Is the hose or wand clogged?

Hair and debris often block the hose and wand.

Disconnect the hose. Look through it for clogs. Clear the wand and nozzle. Run water through the hose if needed. Good: hose and wand clear. Bad: found a clog—clear it and retry.

You can change your answer later.

Clear hose and wand

Use a brush or run water through the hose. Clear the wand nozzle with a pin or brush. Reconnect and retry. If it still does not suction, check the filter.

Is the filter clean and dry?

A dirty or wet filter restricts suction.

Remove the filter. Rinse or replace it. Let it dry if the manual requires it. Check the tank seal. Good: filter clean, seal intact. Bad: filter was dirty—clean it and retry.

You can change your answer later.

Clean filter and check seal

Clean or replace the filter. Check the tank seal for cracks. Reinstall and retry. If it still does not suction, check the pump.

Does the pump run and pull air?

Motor runs but no suction can mean failed pump or air leak.

When the unit is on, listen for the pump pulling air. Check hose connections for leaks. Pump runs, suction restored: done. Pump does not run or makes grinding noise: call a pro.

You can change your answer later.

Carpet cleaner has suction

The unit picks up water and has good suction. You are done.

Call a technician

Call a technician if you have cleared clogs, cleaned the filter, and emptied the tank and it still does not suction, or if the pump makes unusual noise. Pump replacement often needs a pro.
