Steps

Goal: Rule out shortcut, keyboard, and policy so crosh opens.

  • Confirm you press Ctrl+Alt+T (all three keys).
  • Good: Crosh opens. If you need full shell, enable developer mode.
  • Bad: Try an external keyboard.

Check shortcut

Goal: Use the correct key combination.

  • Press Ctrl+Alt+T together. Hold Ctrl+Alt, then press T if needed.
  • Good: Crosh opens. Proceed to Developer mode if you need shell access.
  • Bad: Try an external keyboard; built-in may be faulty.

Developer mode

Goal: Enable full shell access if needed.

  • Basic crosh works without developer mode. For the “shell” command, enable developer mode (see fix-chromebook-has-developer-mode-will-not-enable).
  • Good: Shell works or basic crosh is sufficient.
  • Bad: Managed devices may block developer mode—contact admin.

When to get help

Contact support if:

  • The shortcut is correct and an external keyboard does not help.
  • The Chromebook is managed and crosh is blocked.
  • Chrome OS is updated and crosh still will not open.

Verification

  • Crosh opens when you press Ctrl+Alt+T.
  • You can type commands in the crosh window.
  • The “shell” command works if developer mode is enabled.

Escalation ladder

Work from the device outward. Stop when the problem is fixed.

  1. Shortcut and keyboard Confirm Ctrl+Alt+T; try external keyboard.
  2. Developer mode Enable developer mode for full shell access.
  3. Restart and update Restart Chromebook; update Chrome OS.
  4. Call support Managed device or all steps tried.

What to capture if you need help

Before calling support or posting for help, have these ready. It speeds everything up.

  • Chromebook model and whether it is managed
  • Whether Ctrl+Alt+T works on external keyboard
  • Steps already tried

Are you pressing Ctrl+Alt+T correctly?

All three keys must be pressed.

Press Ctrl+Alt+T together. On some keyboards, hold Ctrl+Alt, then press T. Good: crosh opens. Bad: try external keyboard.

You can change your answer later.

Try external keyboard

Built-in keyboard may be faulty.

Connect USB or Bluetooth keyboard. Try Ctrl+Alt+T. If it works, built-in keyboard may have an issue. If not, check managed status.

You can change your answer later.

Crosh opens

If you need full shell access, type "shell" and press Enter. Developer mode must be enabled for shell. Otherwise crosh is working.

Is the Chromebook managed?

Check Settings > About. If managed, crosh may be blocked. Contact your admin. Restart and update Chrome OS; retry Ctrl+Alt+T.

Frequently asked questions

Why would crosh not open?
Wrong keyboard shortcut, developer mode disabled, managed device policy, or faulty keyboard. Ctrl+Alt+T is the standard shortcut.
Do I need developer mode for crosh?
Basic crosh opens without developer mode. Full shell access (shell command) requires developer mode. Some managed devices block crosh entirely.
When should I call support for crosh?
If the shortcut is correct, developer mode is on (if needed), and crosh still will not open. Managed devices may require admin approval.
