Steps

Goal: Confirm the symptom, rule out content and power settings, then isolate the cause.

  • Open a solid color tab or blank document to rule out content-related flicker.
  • Good: You have confirmed the flicker is from the display or software. Proceed to Restart and power settings.
  • Bad: Unclear—restart the Chromebook and check power settings.

Restart and power settings

Goal: Rule out stuck display state and power-saving.

  • Restart the Chromebook. Settings > Device > Power. Turn off battery saver. Plug in the charger.
  • Good: Restart done and power saver off. Proceed to Hardware acceleration.
  • Bad: Still flickers—disable hardware acceleration in Chrome flags.

Hardware acceleration

Goal: Rule out Chrome hardware acceleration as the cause.

  • Open chrome://flags. Search “hardware acceleration”. Disable “Hardware-accelerated video decode” or “GPU rasterization” if available. Restart Chrome.
  • Good: Flicker reduced or stopped. If not, disable extensions.
  • Bad: Still flickers—disable extensions; Powerwash if software is suspected.

Extensions and Powerwash

Goal: Rule out extensions; Powerwash as last software step.

  • chrome://extensions. Disable all extensions. Test. If flicker stops, re-enable one by one to find the culprit.
  • If flicker persists and you suspect software (e.g. after an update), Powerwash. Back up data first. Settings > Advanced > Reset settings > Powerwash.
  • Good: Flicker stopped or you have a clean system to test.
  • Bad: Still flickers—call support. Display cable or backlight may need repair.

When to get help

Call support if:

  • The flicker persists after restart, power settings, hardware acceleration, and extensions.
  • The built-in display flickers but an external display does not—internal display hardware may be faulty.

Verification

  • The display is stable with no flicker on static content.
  • Power settings and hardware acceleration are appropriate.
  • No extension is causing the flicker.

Escalation ladder

Work from the device outward. Stop when the problem is fixed.

  1. Confirm symptom Rule out content; verify flicker on static image.
  2. Restart and power Restart; turn off battery saver; plug in charger.
  3. Hardware acceleration Disable hardware acceleration in Chrome flags.
  4. Extensions and Powerwash Disable extensions; Powerwash if software suspected.
  5. Call support Flicker persists—display hardware may need repair.

What to capture if you need help

Before calling support or posting for help, have these ready. It speeds everything up.

  • Steps already tried

Does the flicker appear on static content (e.g. solid color, blank page)?

Rule out content—some videos or web pages have flickering effects.

Open a solid color tab or blank document. Flicker on static: display or software issue—proceed. Flicker only in video: may be content—still try restart and power settings.

Flicker on static content?

You can change your answer later.

Have you restarted and checked power settings?

Restart and battery saver are common causes.

Restart the Chromebook. Settings > Device > Power. Turn off battery saver. Plug in the charger. Good: restart done, power saver off—check hardware acceleration. Bad: still flickers—disable hardware acceleration.

You can change your answer later.

Restart and check power settings

Restart. Turn off battery saver. Plug in charger. If still flickers, disable hardware acceleration in chrome://flags.

Is hardware acceleration enabled?

Hardware acceleration can cause flicker on some Chromebooks.

chrome://flags. Search "hardware acceleration". Disable "Hardware-accelerated video decode" or "GPU rasterization" if available. Restart Chrome. Flicker stops: hardware acceleration was the cause. Still flickers: disable extensions; Powerwash if needed.
Question

Hardware acceleration disabled?

You can change your answer later.

Disable extensions and test

chrome://extensions. Disable all extensions. Test. If flicker stops, re-enable one by one to find the culprit. If still flickers, Powerwash or call support—display hardware may need repair.
