Steps
Goal: Rule out software and cable, then isolate panel or display hardware.
- Connect an external monitor. If it has no lines, the internal display or cable is the issue.
- Good: You have isolated the cause. Proceed to Try external monitor.
- Bad: If both have lines, update ChromeOS and try Powerwash.
Try external monitor
Goal: Determine whether the Chromebook outputs a clean image.
- Connect an external monitor via HDMI or USB-C. Check if it has lines.
- If the external is clean, the internal display cable or panel has failed. If the lines change with lid angle, the cable is likely loose.
- Good: Cause isolated. Reseat the cable if comfortable, or call a technician.
- Bad: Both have lines—update ChromeOS and Powerwash.
Update ChromeOS
Goal: Rule out software-related artifacts.
- Settings > About Chrome OS > Check for updates. Install and restart. Try Powerwash (Settings > Advanced > Reset settings) if updates do not help. Boot in Guest mode to test without extensions.
- Good: Lines gone after update or Powerwash—software or extension conflict. Remove extensions or keep the update.
- Bad: Lines persist—display hardware may have failed. Call a technician.

- Reseat cable (if comfortable) Open Chromebook and reseat display cable at both ends.
- Call a pro Panel damage or cable reseat failed—technician needed.
