Steps

Goal: Confirm the aspect ratio problem, set the correct resolution, then rule out monitor OSD, scaling, or hardware issues.

  • Check whether the image looks stretched, squashed, or distorted. Circles should look round.
  • Good: You have confirmed the symptom. Proceed to Built-in display or External display.
  • Bad: Unclear—open Settings > Device > Displays and check the current resolution.

Built-in display

Goal: Set the built-in screen to the recommended resolution for correct aspect ratio.

  • Click the status area (clock), then the gear icon. Settings > Device > Displays.
  • Find Resolution. Select the recommended value (often marked with a check or “Recommended”). The recommended resolution matches the display native proportions.
  • If resolution is correct but the image still looks wrong, adjust Display size. Extreme values can distort.
  • Good: Resolution and display size are set. The image has correct proportions.
  • Bad: Recommended resolution is missing—restart; if still missing after restart, Powerwash or call support.

External display

Goal: Set the external monitor to correct resolution and aspect ratio.

  • Settings > Device > Displays. Select the external display (not the built-in).
  • Set resolution to the recommended value. Check the monitor OSD (buttons on the monitor) for aspect ratio—set to 16:9, 16:10, or native. Avoid “stretch” or “fill” if it distorts.
  • If the external display still shows wrong aspect ratio, try a different HDMI or USB-C cable. A bad cable can limit resolution.
  • Good: External display has correct proportions. Done.
  • Bad: Cable and monitor checked, still wrong—call support.

Restart and Powerwash

Goal: Reset display state if settings do not stick.

  • Restart the Chromebook. Recheck Settings > Device > Displays. If aspect ratio was stuck, restart may fix it.
  • If resolution or display size keeps reverting after restart, Powerwash may help. Settings > Advanced > Reset settings > Powerwash. Back up your data first. After Powerwash, set resolution and display size again.
  • Good: Settings persist. Done.
  • Bad: Settings still revert or recommended resolution is missing—call support.

When to get help

Call support if:

  • The recommended resolution is missing from the list.
  • The display stays distorted after Powerwash.
  • The monitor OSD does not fix the aspect ratio.

Verification

  • Resolution is set to the recommended value in Settings > Device > Displays.
  • The image has correct proportions—circles look round, not oval.
  • For external displays, the monitor aspect ratio is set correctly (16:9 or native).
  • No stretch, squash, or distortion.

Escalation ladder

Work from the device outward. Stop when the problem is fixed.

  1. Resolution and display size Set resolution to recommended; adjust display size.
  2. External monitor OSD Set aspect ratio on monitor (16:9, native).
  3. Cable and restart Try different cable; restart Chromebook.
  4. Powerwash Powerwash if settings do not stick.
  5. Call support Recommended resolution missing or display stays distorted.

What to capture if you need help

Before calling support or posting for help, have these ready. It speeds everything up.

Is the problem on the built-in display or an external monitor?

Built-in and external displays use different settings.

Check Settings > Device > Displays. If you use an external monitor, select it. Built-in: set resolution to recommended. External: check Chromebook resolution and monitor OSD.

You can change your answer later.

Is the recommended resolution available?

The recommended resolution matches the display native aspect ratio.

Settings > Device > Displays. Select the built-in display. Set Resolution to recommended. Adjust Display size if needed. Recommended available: select it—proportions should be correct. Recommended missing: restart; if still missing, Powerwash or call support.

You can change your answer later.

Set resolution and display size

Select the recommended resolution. Adjust Display size for comfortable viewing. If proportions are correct, done. If still wrong, Powerwash or call support.

Restart and recheck

Restart the Chromebook. Settings > Device > Displays. Check if recommended resolution appears. If yes, select it. If no, Powerwash or call support—display may be faulty.

Is the external monitor at recommended resolution and correct aspect ratio?

External monitors have their own aspect ratio settings.

Settings > Device > Displays. Select the external display. Set resolution to recommended. Use the monitor OSD to set aspect ratio to 16:9 or native. Correct: done. Still wrong: try different cable; check monitor OSD for stretch/fill.

You can change your answer later.

Try different cable and monitor settings

A bad HDMI or USB-C cable can cause wrong aspect ratio. Try a known-good cable. Check the monitor OSD for aspect ratio (16:9, native). Avoid stretch or fill if it distorts. If still wrong, call support.

Aspect ratio correct

Image has correct proportions. No further action needed.

Frequently asked questions

Why would a Chromebook display have wrong aspect ratio?
Wrong resolution, monitor aspect ratio setting, or scaling can stretch or squash the image. Set resolution to recommended and check the monitor OSD for aspect ratio.
Can I fix wrong aspect ratio myself?
Yes. Settings > Device > Displays. Set resolution to recommended. For external monitors, use the OSD to set aspect ratio to 16:9 or native. Check scaling.
When should I call support for wrong aspect ratio?
If the recommended resolution is missing, the image stays distorted after Powerwash, or the monitor OSD does not fix it. The display may be faulty.
