Steps
Goal: Confirm the symptom, adjust brightness and contrast, then rule out external display or hardware issues.
- Check whether the display looks too flat (washed out), too harsh, or hard to read.
- Good: You have confirmed the symptom. Proceed to Built-in display or External display.
- Bad: Unclear—open Settings > Device > Displays and check brightness and contrast options.
Built-in display
Goal: Adjust brightness and contrast on the built-in screen.
- Set brightness to a comfortable level. Brightness affects perceived contrast. Too low can make the display look flat; too high can look harsh.
- Settings > Device > Displays. If your Chromebook has contrast or appearance options, adjust them. Move sliders so dark areas are distinct from light areas.
- Good: Contrast looks correct. Brightness and contrast set.
- Bad: No contrast options—restart; if still wrong after Powerwash, call support.
External display
Goal: Adjust contrast on an external monitor using its OSD.
- Use the monitor OSD (buttons on the monitor). Adjust contrast. Set so blacks are dark but not crushed and whites are bright but not blown out.
- Good: Contrast looks correct. Monitor OSD adjusted.
- Bad: OSD checked, still wrong—call support.
Restart and Powerwash
Goal: Reset display state if settings do not stick.
- Restart the Chromebook. Recheck Settings > Device > Displays. If contrast was stuck, restart may fix it.
- If contrast settings keep reverting, Powerwash may help. Settings > Advanced > Reset settings > Powerwash. Back up your data first.
- Good: Settings persist after restart or Powerwash.
- Bad: Contrast still wrong after Powerwash—call support.

- Can I fix wrong contrast myself?
- Yes. Adjust brightness. Check Settings > Device > Displays. For external monitors, use the monitor OSD. Restart or Powerwash if settings do not stick.
- When should I call support for wrong contrast?
- If contrast cannot be adjusted, the display stays flat or harsh after Powerwash, or the image has washed-out or crushed blacks—the display hardware may be faulty.
