Steps

Goal: Confirm the symptom, adjust gamma and brightness, then rule out external display or hardware issues.

  • Check whether midtones look too dark, too light, or washed out.
  • Good: You have confirmed the symptom. Proceed to Built-in display or External display.
  • Bad: Unclear—open Settings > Device > Displays and check gamma or appearance options.

Built-in display

Goal: Adjust gamma and brightness on the built-in screen.

  • Settings > Device > Displays. If your Chromebook has gamma or appearance options, adjust them. Gamma affects midtones—set so shadows and highlights look balanced.
  • Many Chromebooks have no gamma control. Adjust brightness—if midtones are too dark, increase brightness; if washed out, decrease.
  • Good: Midtones look correct. Gamma or brightness set.
  • Bad: No gamma options and brightness does not help—restart; if still wrong after Powerwash, call support.

External display

Goal: Adjust gamma on an external monitor using its OSD.

  • Use the monitor OSD (buttons on the monitor). Adjust gamma. Set so midtones look correct—not too dark or washed out.
  • Good: Midtones look correct. Monitor OSD adjusted.
  • Bad: OSD checked, still wrong—call support.

Restart and Powerwash

Goal: Reset display state if settings do not stick.

  • Restart the Chromebook. Recheck Settings > Device > Displays. If gamma was stuck, restart may fix it.
  • If gamma settings keep reverting, Powerwash may help. Settings > Advanced > Reset settings > Powerwash. Back up your data first.
  • Good: Settings persist after restart or Powerwash.
  • Bad: Gamma still wrong after Powerwash—call support.

When to get help

Call support if:

  • Gamma cannot be adjusted in Settings or OSD.
  • The display stays too dark or washed out in midtones after Powerwash.
  • The image has banding or uneven midtones.

Verification

  • Midtones look correct—not too dark or washed out.
  • Brightness is at a comfortable level.
  • For external displays, the monitor OSD gamma is set correctly.
  • No banding or uneven gradients.

Escalation ladder

Work from the device outward. Stop when the problem is fixed.

  1. Brightness Adjust brightness to compensate for gamma.
  2. Display settings Adjust gamma or appearance in Settings.
  3. External monitor OSD Use monitor buttons to adjust gamma.
  4. Restart or Powerwash Reset display state.
  5. Call support Gamma cannot be adjusted or hardware fault.
