Steps

Goal: Confirm the symptom, adjust Night Light color temperature, check external display OSD, then rule out cable and hardware issues.

  • Check whether the display has an unwanted tint—green, magenta, yellow, or blue.
  • Good: You have confirmed the symptom. Proceed to Built-in display or External display.
  • Bad: Unclear—open Settings > Device > Displays and check Night Light.

Built-in display

Goal: Adjust Night Light and color temperature for the built-in screen.

  • Click the status area (clock), then the gear icon. Settings > Device > Displays.
  • Night Light shifts color temperature. Turn it off to test. If the hue looks correct with Night Light off, the color temperature was the cause. Turn Night Light back on and set a milder value.
  • Move the color temperature slider. Warmer reduces blue cast; cooler reduces yellow/red cast.
  • Good: Colors look correct with no tint. Done.
  • Bad: Colors still tinted—restart; if still wrong after Powerwash, call support.

External display

Goal: Use the monitor OSD to adjust hue on an external display.

  • Settings > Device > Displays. Select the external display.
  • Use the monitor buttons to open the OSD. Look for Hue, Tint, or Color. Adjust to remove the cast.
  • If the external display still has wrong hue, try a different HDMI or USB-C cable. A bad cable can cause color shift.
  • Good: External display colors look correct. Done.
  • Bad: No OSD control or colors still tinted—call support.

Restart and Powerwash

Goal: Reset display state if settings do not stick.

  • Restart the Chromebook. Recheck Settings > Device > Displays. If hue was stuck, restart may fix it.
  • If color settings keep reverting after restart, Powerwash may help. Settings > Advanced > Reset settings > Powerwash. Back up your data first.
  • Good: Settings persist. Done.
  • Bad: Colors still tinted—call support.

When to get help

Call support if:

  • Colors stay tinted after adjusting Night Light, Powerwash, and external monitor OSD.
  • The display has no OSD hue control and built-in adjustments do not help.

Verification

  • Colors look correct with no unwanted tint.
  • Night Light and color temperature are set to your preference.
  • For external displays, the monitor OSD hue is adjusted.
  • Cable is known-good if you changed it.

Escalation ladder

Work from the device outward. Stop when the problem is fixed.

  1. Night Light and color temperature Adjust or turn off Night Light; set color temperature.
  2. External display OSD Use monitor OSD to adjust hue or tint.
  3. Cable Try a different HDMI or USB-C cable.
  4. Restart and Powerwash Restart; Powerwash if settings do not stick.
  5. Call support Colors stay tinted after all adjustments.

What to capture if you need help

Before calling support or posting for help, have these ready. It speeds everything up.

  • Chromebook model
  • Built-in or external display
  • Night Light and color temperature settings
  • Steps already tried

Is the problem on the built-in display or an external monitor?

Built-in and external displays use different controls.

Check Settings > Device > Displays. If you use an external monitor, it may have its own OSD. Built-in: adjust Night Light and color temperature. External: check both Chromebook and monitor OSD.

You can change your answer later.

Is Night Light affecting the hue?

Night Light shifts color temperature and can cause a tint.

Settings > Device > Displays. Turn off Night Light to test. Tint gone with Night Light off: adjust color temperature or leave off. Still tinted: restart; if still wrong, Powerwash or call support.

You can change your answer later.

Adjust Night Light

Turn Night Light back on. Move the color temperature slider toward the middle. Warmer reduces blue; cooler reduces yellow. If hue looks correct, you are done.

Restart and recheck

Restart the Chromebook. Recheck Settings. If hue still wrong after Powerwash, call support.

Does the monitor OSD have hue or tint control?

External monitors often have hue/tint in Picture or Color menu.

Use monitor buttons to open OSD. Look for Hue, Tint, or Color. Adjust to remove the cast. Fixed: done. No control or still wrong: try a different cable; if still wrong, call support.

You can change your answer later.

Try a different cable

A bad HDMI or USB-C cable can cause color shift. Try a known-good cable. If hue correct with new cable, you are done. If still wrong, call support.

Hue correct

Colors look correct with no unwanted tint. No further action needed.

Call support

If colors stay tinted after adjusting Night Light, Powerwash, and external monitor OSD, call Chromebook support. The display panel may need repair.
