Steps
Goal: Confirm the refresh rate symptom, set the correct refresh rate, then rule out external display, cable, or hardware issues.
- Check whether the display flickers, stutters, or feels sluggish when scrolling or moving the cursor.
- Good: You have confirmed the symptom. Proceed to Built-in display or External display.
- Bad: Unclear—open Settings > Device > Displays and check the current refresh rate.
Built-in display
Goal: Set the built-in screen to the highest supported refresh rate.
- Click the status area (clock), then the gear icon. Settings > Device > Displays.
- Find Refresh rate or Display frequency. Select the highest value (often 60 Hz or 120 Hz). Lower values (e.g. 30 Hz) cause flicker or stutter.
- If the highest rate causes issues, try one step lower. Some panels are unstable at max.
- Good: The display is smooth. Done.
- Bad: No refresh rate option—restart; if still missing, Powerwash or call support. If flickers at all settings—call support.
External display
Goal: Set the external monitor to the highest supported refresh rate.
- Settings > Device > Displays. Select the external display (not the built-in).
- Set refresh rate to the highest value. Check the monitor OSD for refresh rate or gaming mode—some monitors need OSD changes.
- If the external display still flickers, try a different HDMI or USB-C cable. Old or cheap cables may not support high refresh rates.
- Good: External display is smooth. Done.
- Bad: Cable and monitor checked, still flickers—call support.
Restart and Powerwash
Goal: Reset display state if settings do not stick.
- Restart the Chromebook. Recheck Settings > Device > Displays. If refresh rate was stuck, restart may fix it.
- If refresh rate keeps reverting after restart, Powerwash may help. Settings > Advanced > Reset settings > Powerwash. Back up your data first. After Powerwash, set refresh rate again.
- Good: Settings persist. Done.
- Bad: Settings still revert—call support.
When to get help
Call support if:
- The refresh rate option is missing and does not appear after restart or Powerwash.
- The display flickers at all refresh rate settings.
- Settings do not stick after Powerwash.
Verification
- Refresh rate is set to the highest supported in Settings > Device > Displays.
- The display is smooth when scrolling or moving the cursor—no flicker or stutter.
- For external displays, the monitor shows the correct refresh rate.
- Settings persist after restart.
Escalation ladder
Work from the device outward. Stop when the problem is fixed.
- Refresh rate Set refresh rate to highest supported (60 Hz or 120 Hz).
- Resolution and refresh Check resolution/refresh combination; lower resolution if needed.
- External monitor and cable Check monitor OSD; try different cable.
- Powerwash Powerwash if settings do not stick.
