Steps

Goal: Confirm the symptom, adjust resolution and display size, then rule out external display or hardware issues.

  • Check whether the display looks too small (tiny text), too large (cropped), stretched, or has wrong aspect ratio.
  • Good: You have confirmed the symptom. Proceed to Built-in display or External display.
  • Bad: Unclear—open Settings > Device > Displays and check the current resolution.

Built-in display

Goal: Set the built-in screen to the recommended resolution and adjust display size.

  • Click the status area (clock), then the gear icon. Settings > Device > Displays.
  • Find Resolution. Select the recommended value (often marked with a check or “Recommended”). The recommended resolution is the native resolution for the panel.
  • If resolution is correct but text or icons are too small or too large, change Display size. Larger values make everything bigger; smaller values make everything smaller.
  • Good: Resolution and display size are set. The image is sharp and readable.
  • Bad: Recommended resolution is missing—restart; if still missing after restart, Powerwash or call support.

External display

Goal: Set the external monitor to its recommended resolution and check the cable.

  • Settings > Device > Displays. Select the external display (not the built-in).
  • Set resolution to the recommended value. Check the monitor OSD (buttons on the monitor) for its native resolution—it should match.
  • If the external display still shows wrong resolution, try a different HDMI or USB-C cable. A bad cable can limit the resolution the Chromebook can output.
  • Good: External display is at recommended resolution. Adjust display size if needed.
  • Bad: Cable and monitor checked, still wrong—call support.

Restart and Powerwash

Goal: Reset display state if settings do not stick.

  • Restart the Chromebook. Recheck Settings > Device > Displays. If resolution was stuck, restart may fix it.
  • If resolution or display size keeps reverting after restart, Powerwash may help. Settings > Advanced > Reset settings > Powerwash. Back up your data first. After Powerwash, set resolution and display size again.
  • Good: Settings persist after restart or Powerwash.
  • Bad: Settings still revert or recommended resolution is missing—call support.

When to get help

Call support if:

  • The recommended resolution is missing from the list.
  • The display stays at a wrong resolution after Powerwash.
  • The image is distorted (lines, artifacts, wrong aspect ratio that cannot be fixed in Settings).

Verification

  • Resolution is set to the recommended value in Settings > Device > Displays.
  • Display size (scaling) is comfortable for reading.
  • For external displays, the monitor shows its native resolution and the image is sharp.
  • No distortion, cropping, or stretched image.

Escalation ladder

Work from the device outward. Stop when the problem is fixed.

  1. Resolution and display size Set resolution to recommended; adjust display size.
  2. Restart Restart and recheck settings.
  3. External display Check monitor OSD and cable.
  4. Powerwash Powerwash if settings do not stick.
  5. Call support Recommended resolution missing or display distorted.

What to capture if you need help

Before calling support or posting for help, have these ready. It speeds everything up.

Is the problem on the built-in display or an external monitor?

Built-in and external displays use different settings.

Check Settings > Device > Displays. If you use an external monitor, select it to see its resolution. Built-in: adjust resolution and display size for the laptop screen. External: check both Chromebook and monitor settings.

You can change your answer later.

Is the recommended resolution available?

The recommended resolution is the native resolution for the display.

Settings > Device > Displays. Select the built-in display. Check Resolution. Recommended available: select it. Adjust Display size if text is too small or large. Recommended missing: restart; if still missing, Powerwash or call support.

You can change your answer later.

Set resolution and display size

Select the recommended resolution. Adjust Display size for comfortable text. Restart if needed. If settings stick, you are done. If they revert, Powerwash or call support.

Restart and recheck

Restart the Chromebook. Settings > Device > Displays. Check if recommended resolution appears. If yes, select it. If no, Powerwash or call support—display may be faulty.

Is the external monitor at its recommended resolution?

External monitors have their own native resolution.

Settings > Device > Displays. Select the external display. Set resolution to recommended. Check the monitor OSD (buttons on the monitor) for its native resolution. At recommended: adjust display size if needed. Not at recommended: try a different cable; check monitor OSD.

You can change your answer later.

Try different cable and monitor settings

A bad HDMI or USB-C cable can limit resolution. Try a known-good cable. Check the monitor OSD for resolution. If the monitor reports a low max resolution, the cable or monitor may be the limit. If still wrong, call support.

Resolution correct

External display is at recommended resolution. Adjust display size if text is too small or large. You are done.

Frequently asked questions

Why would a Chromebook show the wrong resolution?
Resolution or display size (scaling) set incorrectly. An update or Powerwash can reset settings. External monitors may have different native resolutions.
Can I fix wrong resolution myself?
Yes. Settings > Device > Displays. Change resolution or display size. For external displays, check the monitor settings and cable. If settings do not stick, restart or Powerwash.
When should I call support for wrong resolution?
If the recommended resolution is missing, the display stays at a wrong resolution after Powerwash, or the image is distorted—the display hardware may be faulty.
