Steps

Goal: Confirm the symptom, set resolution to recommended, adjust display size, then check external display OSD.

  • Check whether the display looks blurry (soft) or overly sharp (harsh edges).
  • Good: You have confirmed the symptom. Proceed to Built-in display or External display.
  • Bad: Unclear—open Settings > Device > Displays and check the current resolution.

Built-in display

Goal: Set the built-in screen to the recommended resolution and adjust display size.

  • Click the status area (clock), then the gear icon. Settings > Device > Displays.
  • Find Resolution. Select the recommended value (often marked with a check or “Recommended”). The recommended resolution is the native resolution for the panel.
  • If resolution is correct but text looks blurry or jagged, change display size. Try 100% or 200% for crisp text. Non-integer scaling (e.g. 125%) can reduce sharpness.
  • Good: Resolution and display size are set. The image is sharp and readable.
  • Bad: Display stays blurry at recommended resolution—restart; if still wrong after Powerwash, call support.

External display

Goal: Set the external monitor to its recommended resolution and adjust OSD sharpness.

  • Settings > Device > Displays. Select the external display (not the built-in).
  • Set resolution to the recommended value. Check the monitor OSD (buttons on the monitor) for Sharpness or Picture. Adjust—too high can cause halos; too low can look soft.
  • If the external display still has wrong sharpness, try a different HDMI or USB-C cable. A bad cable can affect image quality.
  • Good: External display is sharp. Done.
  • Bad: Cable and OSD checked, still wrong—call support.

Restart and Powerwash

Goal: Reset display state if settings do not stick.

  • Restart the Chromebook. Recheck Settings > Device > Displays. If sharpness was stuck, restart may fix it.
  • If resolution or display size keeps reverting after restart, Powerwash may help. Settings > Advanced > Reset settings > Powerwash. Back up your data first.
  • Good: Settings persist. Done.
  • Bad: Display still blurry at recommended resolution—call support.

When to get help

Call support if:

  • The display stays blurry or overly sharp at the recommended resolution after Powerwash.
  • The recommended resolution is missing from the list.

Verification

  • Resolution is set to the recommended value in Settings > Device > Displays.
  • Display size is comfortable and text is sharp.
  • For external displays, the monitor OSD sharpness is adjusted.
  • No blur, halos, or jagged edges.

Escalation ladder

Work from the device outward. Stop when the problem is fixed.

  1. Resolution and display size Set resolution to recommended; adjust display size.
  2. External display OSD Use monitor OSD to adjust sharpness.
  3. Restart Restart and recheck settings.
  4. Powerwash Powerwash if settings do not stick.
  5. Call support Display stays blurry at recommended resolution.

Is the problem on the built-in display or an external monitor?

Built-in and external displays use different settings.

Check Settings > Device > Displays. If you use an external monitor, select it to see its resolution. Built-in: set resolution to recommended and adjust display size. External: check both Chromebook and monitor settings.

You can change your answer later.

Is the recommended resolution selected?

The recommended resolution is the native resolution for the display.

Settings > Device > Displays. Select the built-in display. Check Resolution. Recommended selected: adjust Display size—try 100% or 200% for crisp text. Recommended not selected: select it. Non-integer scaling can cause blur.

You can change your answer later.

Set resolution to recommended

Select the recommended resolution. Adjust Display size. If sharpness correct, you are done. If still wrong, restart or call support.

Is display size causing blur?

Non-integer scaling (e.g. 125%) can reduce sharpness.

Try Display size 100% or 200%. If sharpness correct, you are done. If still blurry at recommended resolution, restart; if still wrong after Powerwash, call support.

You can change your answer later.

Restart and recheck

Restart the Chromebook. Recheck Settings. If sharpness still wrong at recommended resolution after Powerwash, call support.

Is the external monitor at recommended resolution?

External monitors have their own native resolution.

Settings > Device > Displays. Select the external display. Set resolution to recommended. Check the monitor OSD for sharpness. At recommended: adjust OSD sharpness if needed. Not at recommended: select it; check monitor OSD.

You can change your answer later.

Set external resolution and OSD

Select recommended resolution. Use monitor OSD to adjust sharpness. If sharpness correct, you are done. If still wrong, try a different cable or call support.

Adjust monitor OSD sharpness

Use monitor buttons to open OSD. Look for Sharpness or Picture. Adjust. Too high can cause halos; too low can look soft. If sharpness correct, you are done.

Sharpness correct

Display is sharp and readable. No further action needed.
