Steps

Goal: Confirm the symptom, rule out cable and input, then select mirror mode.

  • Confirm the HDMI or USB-C cable is firmly connected at both ends.
  • Good: Connected. Proceed to Check connections.
  • Bad: Reseat the cable; set the display to HDMI input.

Check connections

Goal: Confirm cable and display input are correct.

  • Reseat the cable. Set the external display to the correct HDMI input.
  • Good: Cable and input correct. Proceed to Select mirror mode.
  • Bad: Try a different cable or display.

Select mirror mode

Goal: Have the Chromebook detect the display and switch to mirror mode.

  • Open Settings > Device > Displays. Click “Detect” if the external display is not listed.
  • Select the external display. Turn on “Mirror built-in display” or use the display key to cycle to mirror.
  • Good: Same image on both screens. Mirror mode is active.
  • Bad: Display not detected—try a different cable. Display detected but no mirror—try the display key or restart with the cable connected.

Detect and restart

Goal: Rule out detection issues.

  • Restart the Chromebook with the cable connected. Some Chromebooks detect displays better at boot.
  • After restart, open Settings > Device > Displays. Confirm the external display appears. Select mirror.
  • Good: Display detected and mirror works.
  • Bad: Try a different cable or adapter. If the cable and display work with another device, call support.

When to get help

Contact support if:

  • The cable and display work with another device.
  • The Chromebook still will not mirror after checking connections and display mode.

Verification

  • The external display shows the same content as the Chromebook screen.
  • Mirror mode is active in Settings > Device > Displays.
  • No “No signal” on the external display.

Escalation ladder

Work from the device outward. Stop when the problem is fixed.

  1. Connections Reseat cable; set display to HDMI input.
  2. Detect display Settings > Displays > Detect; confirm external display appears.
  3. Mirror mode Select "Mirror built-in display" or use display key.
  4. Different cable Try another HDMI cable or adapter.
  5. Call support Cable and display work elsewhere; Chromebook port may be faulty.

  • Steps already tried

Is the cable firmly connected at both ends?

Loose connection is common.

Reseat at Chromebook and display. Set display to HDMI input. Yes: open Settings > Displays. No: connect firmly, set input.

You can change your answer later.

Is the external display detected?

Chromebook must detect the display before mirror works.

Settings > Device > Displays. Click "Detect" if the external display is not listed. Detected: select it and choose Mirror. Not detected: try different cable or display.

You can change your answer later.

Is mirror mode selected?

Chromebook may be in extend mode instead of mirror.

Settings > Device > Displays. Select the external display. Turn on "Mirror built-in display" or use the display key to cycle to mirror. Mirror on: same image on both screens. Still extend: try display key or restart.

You can change your answer later.

Connect and set input

Plug cable at both ends. Set display to HDMI 1 or 2. Open Settings > Device > Displays > Detect.

Try different cable

Use another HDMI cable. If USB-C adapter, try different adapter. Try different display.

Restart with display connected

Restart the Chromebook with the cable connected. Check Settings > Displays for mirror after boot. If still no mirror, try different cable or call support.

Mirror working

Same image on both screens. Mirror mode is active.
