Steps
Goal: Rule out key sequence and USB so recovery runs.
- Confirm you hold Esc+Refresh, then press Power.
- Good: Recovery screen appears. Proceed to Key sequence.
- Bad: Retry the key sequence; try power-cycle.
Key sequence
Goal: Use the correct key combination.
- Turn off the Chromebook. Hold Esc and Refresh. Press Power. Release when the recovery screen appears.
- Good: Recovery screen shows. Proceed to Recovery USB.
- Bad: Power-cycle (unplug, hold power 15 sec), then retry.
Recovery USB
Goal: Use a valid recovery USB.
- Create the USB with the Chromebook Recovery Utility on another computer. Use an 8 GB+ drive. Try a different drive if the first fails.
- Good: USB is detected. Follow recovery prompts.
- Bad: Try a different USB drive or port; re-create the recovery image.

- The correct key sequence and a known-good USB do not work.
- Recovery starts but fails with an error.
