Steps

Goal: Rule out USB, port, and procedure so the Chromebook boots from USB.

  • Insert the USB before power-on.
  • Good: USB inserted first. Proceed to USB and port.
  • Bad: Insert the USB, then hold Esc+Refresh and press Power.

USB and port

Goal: Use a valid USB and working port.

  • Create the USB with Chromebook Recovery Utility (for recovery) or the correct tool (for Linux). Try a different USB drive and port.
  • Good: USB is valid. Proceed to Boot procedure.
  • Bad: Re-create the USB; try a different drive.

Boot procedure

Goal: Use the correct key sequence.

  • Turn off the Chromebook. Insert the USB. Hold Esc+Refresh, press Power. Release when the recovery screen appears.
  • Good: Chromebook boots from USB.
  • Bad: For Linux boot, enable developer mode first.
