Steps

Goal: Free storage and ensure a stable connection so updates can download.

  • Check storage—need at least 1–2 GB free.
  • Good: Storage free. Proceed to Check for updates.
  • Bad: Free storage first.

Free storage

Goal: Ensure adequate space for updates.

  • Delete files, empty Trash, remove Android apps. Need at least 1–2 GB free.
  • Good: Storage freed. Check for updates.
  • Bad: Remove more files or Android apps.

Check for updates

Goal: Manually trigger an update.

  • Settings, About Chrome OS, Check for updates. Wait for the download. Restart when prompted.
  • Good: Update applies.
  • Bad: Restart and retry. Check if the device is end-of-life.

When to get help

Call a technician if:

  • The device is supported (not end-of-life).
  • Storage is free and connection is good.
  • Updates still fail after Powerwash.

Verification

  • Storage has at least 1–2 GB free.
  • Update downloads and applies.
  • Chromebook restarts and shows the new version.

Escalation ladder

Work from the device outward. Stop when the problem is fixed.

  1. Storage and connection Free at least 1–2 GB; connect to stable WiFi.
  2. Check for updates Settings, About Chrome OS, Check for updates.
  3. Restart and Powerwash Restart; Powerwash if corrupted.
  4. Call a pro Supported device but will not update.

Restart the Chromebook. Check for updates again. If device is end-of-life, it will not receive new updates. If supported and still fails, Powerwash or call a technician.
