Steps

Goal: Confirm the symptom, rule out ice bridge and auger jam, then isolate the cause—solenoid, auger motor, or dispenser switch.

  • Check the ice bin. If the bin has ice but pressing the lever or button delivers nothing, the dispenser has failed. If the bin is empty, the ice machine is not producing—see fix-commercial-ice-machine-will-not-make-ice.
  • Good: Bin has ice, dispenser does nothing—proceed to Check power and ice bridge.
  • Bad: Bin empty—ice production problem, not dispenser.

Check power and ice bridge

Goal: Rule out power loss and ice bridge before opening components.

  • Confirm the machine is plugged in and the circuit breaker has not tripped. Reset the breaker if tripped.
  • Open the bin: look for an ice bridge (ice frozen together in a solid block). If present, break it with a plastic utensil—never use metal. Remove loose ice if needed to access the bridge.
  • Check the auger—turn it by hand. If it does not turn freely, clear any obstruction (ice, debris, foreign object). Unplug before inspecting.
  • Good: Power on, loose ice in bin, auger turns freely. Proceed to Check solenoid and switch.
  • Bad: Breaker trips again—call a technician. Auger still jammed—call a technician if you cannot clear it.

Check solenoid and switch

Goal: Isolate solenoid or dispenser switch failure when nothing happens when you press.

  • Press the dispenser. Listen for a click (solenoid) and watch for auger movement. If you hear nothing, the solenoid or switch may have failed. On some models the dispenser is disabled when the bin door is open—close the door firmly and try again.
  • Locate the solenoid and dispenser switch. Check your owner’s manual or search “[brand] [model] dispenser solenoid” for location. Test for continuity with a multimeter if you have one. Replace the faulty part with a matching part.
  • Good: Solenoid or switch replaced. Dispenser works.
  • Bad: Both test good but still no response—check auger motor or call a technician.

Check auger motor

Goal: Test and replace the auger motor when the solenoid clicks but no ice moves.

  • If you hear a click but the auger does not turn, the auger motor may have failed. Unplug the machine. Locate the auger motor (often under the bin or behind an access panel). Check your owner’s manual or search “[brand] [model] auger motor” for access.
  • Test the motor for continuity. Replace with a matching part if faulty.
  • Good: Motor replaced. Auger turns when dispenser is activated. Ice dispenses.
  • Bad: Motor runs but auger does not move—possible gear or drive failure; call a technician.

Check dispenser chute

Goal: Rule out chute blockage when solenoid and auger respond but no ice exits.

  • Inspect the chute from the bin to the outlet. Clear any packed ice or debris. Confirm the chute door or flap opens when the dispenser is activated.
  • Good: Chute clear. Ice exits when dispenser runs.
  • Bad: Chute clear but still no ice—auger motor or gear failure; call a technician.

When to get help

Call a commercial refrigeration or appliance technician if:

  • You have cleared ice bridges and jams, replaced the solenoid, and the dispenser still does not work.
  • The auger motor runs but no ice moves (possible gear or drive failure).
  • You are not comfortable working with electrical components.

Do not attempt to repair refrigerant lines or the sealed system yourself.

Verification

  • Activating the dispenser delivers ice when the bin has ice.
  • No ice bridge in the bin; auger turns freely.
  • Solenoid and auger motor (if replaced) respond when the dispenser is activated.
  • Ice exits the chute without blockage.

Escalation ladder

Work from the device outward. Stop when the problem is fixed.

  1. Confirm symptom Verify the bin has ice and the dispenser does nothing when activated; rule out ice production problem.
  2. Ice bridge and auger Break ice bridge; clear auger jam.
  3. Solenoid and switch Test and replace dispenser solenoid or switch if faulty.
  4. Auger motor Test and replace auger motor if it does not run.
  5. Call a pro Solenoid and motor replaced with no fix, or gear failure—call a commercial refrigeration technician.

What to capture if you need help

Before calling support or posting for help, have these ready. It speeds everything up.

  • Whether the bin has ice
  • Whether you hear a click when pressing
  • Whether the auger turns when activated
  • Solenoid and motor test results
  • Steps already tried

Does the bin have ice but nothing comes out when you activate the dispenser?

Check the bin. If the bin is empty, the ice machine is not producing—different problem. If the bin has ice but the dispenser does nothing, this guide applies.

Check the ice bin. Bin has ice, dispenser does nothing: Dispenser fault—proceed. Bin empty: Ice machine not producing—see fix-commercial-ice-machine-will-not-make-ice. Dispenser works: No action needed.

You can change your answer later.

No action needed

If the bin is empty, the ice machine is not producing—see fix-commercial-ice-machine-will-not-make-ice. If the dispenser works, no action needed.

Is power on and the circuit breaker not tripped?

The dispenser needs power. Check the breaker before opening the machine.

Confirm the machine is plugged in and the circuit breaker has not tripped. Reset the breaker if tripped. Good: power on. Bad: breaker trips again—call a technician.

You can change your answer later.

Reset breaker and test

Reset the circuit breaker. Retest. If it trips again immediately, call a technician.

Is there an ice bridge or jammed auger?

Ice bridges block the auger. A jammed auger cannot turn.

Open the bin. Look for an ice bridge (solid block)—break it with a plastic utensil, never metal. Check the auger—turn it by hand. If it does not turn freely, clear any obstruction. Good: Loose ice, auger turns freely. Bad: Auger still jammed—call a technician if you cannot clear it.

You can change your answer later.

Clear ice bridge and auger jam, then test

Break the ice bridge with a plastic utensil. Clear the auger. Plug in and test. The dispenser should work. If it still does not, proceed to check the solenoid and auger motor.

Does the solenoid or auger respond when you press?

The solenoid opens to release ice. The auger motor turns the auger. If nothing happens, the switch or solenoid may have failed.

Press the dispenser. Listen for a click (solenoid) and watch for auger movement. Click but no ice: Auger motor may have failed—check auger motor. No click: Solenoid or dispenser switch may have failed—test and replace. Both work: Check chute for blockage.

You can change your answer later.

Replace solenoid or switch and test

Test the solenoid and dispenser switch for continuity. Replace the faulty part with a matching part. Retest. If it still does not work, check the auger motor or call a technician.

Is the chute blocked?

Ice can pack in the chute and block the path.

Inspect the dispenser chute from the bin to the outlet. Clear any packed ice or debris. Confirm the chute door opens when activated. Good: Chute clear, ice dispenses. Bad: Chute clear but still no ice—auger motor may have failed; call a technician.

You can change your answer later.

Clear chute and test

Clear the chute. Retest. Ice should dispense. If it still does not, proceed to check the auger motor or call a technician.

Call a technician

Call a commercial refrigeration or appliance technician if you have cleared ice bridges and jams, replaced the solenoid, and the dispenser still does not work; if the auger motor runs but no ice moves; or if you are not comfortable working with electrical components.

Frequently asked questions

Why would a commercial ice dispenser not release ice?
Common causes: ice bridge in the bin (ice frozen together), jammed auger, failed solenoid, failed auger motor, or faulty dispenser switch. Check the bin and auger first, then the solenoid and motor.
What is an ice bridge?
Ice frozen together in the bin, forming a solid block. The auger cannot grab ice when a bridge forms. Break it up with a plastic utensil—never use metal, which can damage the bin.
When should I call a technician for an ice dispenser?
Call a pro if you have cleared ice bridges and jams, replaced the solenoid, and the dispenser still does not work; if the auger motor runs but no ice moves; or if you are not comfortable working with electrical components.
