Steps

Goal: Close stuck apps, end processes, check for updates, and shut down—or force shutdown only when needed.

  • Close all open programs. Save your work. Click Start, Power, Shut down.
  • Wait 2–3 minutes. Some processes take time to finish.
  • Good: The computer shuts down. You are done.
  • Bad: The computer hangs or stays on. Proceed to Close apps and Task Manager.

Close apps and Task Manager

Goal: End stuck or not-responding processes that block shutdown.

  • Press Ctrl+Shift+Esc to open Task Manager.
  • Look for apps marked “Not responding.” Right-click each and select End task.
  • Check for apps using high CPU or disk. End any you do not need.
  • Try Shut down again.
  • Good: The computer shuts down.
  • Bad: The computer still hangs. Proceed to Check updates and Fast Startup.

Check updates and Fast Startup

Goal: Rule out Windows Update and Fast Startup as causes of the hang.

  • Open Settings, Windows Update. If updates are downloading or “Restart required” is shown, let them finish. Restart if needed, then try Shut down again.
  • If no pending updates, open Control Panel, Power Options, Choose what the power buttons do. Click “Change settings that are currently unavailable.” Uncheck “Turn on fast startup.” Save.
  • Try Shut down again.
  • Good: The computer shuts down.
  • Bad: The computer still hangs. Proceed to Force shutdown or When to get help.

Force shutdown

Goal: Power off the computer when it is completely unresponsive.

  • Hold the power button for 10 seconds until the computer powers off.
  • You will lose unsaved work. Use only as a last resort.
  • Do not use force shutdown routinely—it can corrupt files if the system was writing data.
  • Good: The computer powers off.
  • Bad: The computer does not respond to the power button—unplug it (desktop) or remove the battery (laptop, if removable). If the computer hangs on every shutdown, call a technician.

When to get help

Call a technician if:

  • The computer hangs on every shutdown after you have closed apps, ended processes, disabled Fast Startup, and checked for updates.
  • A driver or hardware issue may be causing the hang.
  • The computer does not respond to the power button.

Verification

  • The computer powers off completely when you click Shut down.
  • No hang at “Shutting down” or black screen with fans still running.
  • After force shutdown, the computer boots normally when you turn it back on.

Escalation ladder

Work from the device outward. Stop when the problem is fixed.

  1. Close apps Close all open programs; try Shut down again.
  2. Task Manager End stuck or not-responding processes.
  3. Updates and Fast Startup Let updates finish; disable Fast Startup.
  4. Force shutdown Hold power button 10 seconds—last resort only.
  5. Call a pro If shutdown hangs every time after all steps.

What to capture if you need help

Before calling support or posting for help, have these ready. It speeds everything up.

  • Whether any app was "Not responding"
  • Pending Windows updates
  • Fast Startup setting
  • Steps already tried

You can change your answer later.

Let updates complete

You can change your answer later.

Force shutdown or call a pro

Force shutdown loses unsaved work. Use only when unresponsive.

If the computer is completely unresponsive: hold the power button 10 seconds until it powers off. If the computer hangs on every shutdown after all steps, call a technician—a driver or hardware issue may be the cause.

Shutdown complete

The computer shut down successfully.
