Fix a dehumidifier that will not drain

We'll confirm the unit collects water, check the drain hose and outlet, rule out clogs and slope issues, then isolate the cause—float switch, drain pump, or condensate path—or tell you when to call a pro.

Steps

Goal: Confirm the unit collects water, then check the drain plug, hose, slope, and pump.

  • Run the dehumidifier for at least an hour. Check if water collects in the bucket.
  • Good: The bucket fills—the drain path is the problem. Proceed to Check drain plug and hose.
  • Bad: The bucket stays empty—the unit may not be dehumidifying. See fix-dehumidifier-will-not-run.

Check drain plug and hose

Goal: Rule out the most common causes—plug in place or hose not connected.

  • Look for a rubber or plastic plug in the drain outlet (usually on the back or side). Remove it if present.
  • Confirm the drain hose is firmly attached to the outlet. Push it on until it seats.
  • Inspect the hose for kinks. Straighten kinks or replace the hose if damaged.
  • Good: Plug removed, hose connected, no kinks. Proceed to Gravity drain or Pump path based on your unit.
  • Bad: Plug in place or hose loose—fix and retest.

Gravity drain

Goal: Confirm the hose slopes downward and is not clogged. Gravity drain requires the hose to slope downhill.

  • The hose must slope down from the unit to the drain. A rule of thumb: at least 1 inch of drop per foot of hose. Reposition the unit or hose if needed.
  • Disconnect the hose and look into the drain outlet for debris. Flush the outlet with a cup of water. Run water through the hose to check for clogs. Clear with a pipe cleaner or brush if needed.
  • Good: Hose slopes down and is clear. Water drains when the unit runs.
  • Bad: Hose level or uphill, or clogged—fix the slope and clear clogs, then retest.

Pump path

Goal: Check the drain pump and float switch on pump-equipped models.

  • Listen for the pump when the bucket area fills. If the pump does not run, the float switch may be stuck. Check the float—it should move freely. Free it if stuck.
  • If the pump runs but no water moves, the pump inlet may be clogged. Clear the inlet and test. If the pump still does not move water, the pump has failed—call a technician.
  • Good: Pump runs and water flows. The drain works.
  • Bad: Pump runs but no water—pump failure. Call a technician. Do not attempt pump replacement yourself.

When to get help

Call an appliance technician if:

  • The drain pump runs but no water moves (pump failure).
  • You have cleared the hose and outlet and it still does not drain.
  • You are not comfortable working with the unit.

Pump replacement often requires disassembly and should be done by a technician.

Verification

  • Water flows from the drain hose when the unit runs and the room is humid.
  • No water pooling under or around the unit.
  • The bucket does not fill when the hose is connected and draining correctly.
  • No kinks in the hose and the slope is correct for gravity drain (or the pump runs on pump-equipped models).

Escalation ladder

Work from the device outward. Stop when the problem is fixed.

  1. Confirm symptom Verify the unit runs and collects water in the bucket—drain path is the problem.
  2. Drain plug and hose Remove the plug, connect the hose, confirm no kinks.
  3. Hose slope and clogs Confirm downward slope for gravity drain; clear clogs in outlet and hose.
  4. Pump and float Check pump and float switch on pump-equipped models.
  5. Call a pro Pump failure, persistent drain issues, or pump replacement needed.

What to capture if you need help

Before calling support or posting for help, have these ready. It speeds everything up.

  • Whether the bucket fills when the unit runs
  • Whether the drain plug is removed
  • Hose connection and condition (kinks, slope)
  • Whether the unit has a drain pump
  • Pump and float switch status (if pump-equipped)
  • Steps already tried

Does the bucket fill when the unit runs?

If the bucket fills, the unit is dehumidifying and the drain path is the problem. If the bucket stays empty, the unit may not be working—see fix-dehumidifier-will-not-run.

Run the dehumidifier for at least an hour in a humid space. Check the bucket. Good: bucket fills—drain path is the problem. Bad: bucket stays empty—unit may not be dehumidifying; see fix-dehumidifier-will-not-run.

You can change your answer later.

Unit may not be dehumidifying

If the bucket stays empty when the unit runs, the problem may be elsewhere. See fix-dehumidifier-will-not-run. If you have confirmed the unit runs and the room is humid, call a technician.

Is the drain plug removed and the hose connected?

A plug in the outlet or a disconnected hose prevents drainage.

Check the drain outlet for a rubber or plastic plug. Remove it if present. Confirm the hose is firmly attached to the outlet. Good: plug out, hose connected. Bad: plug in or hose loose—fix and retest.

You can change your answer later.

Remove plug and connect hose

Remove the drain plug from the outlet. Push the hose firmly onto the outlet. Run the unit and check if water drains. If it still does not drain, proceed to Check hose slope and clogs.

Does the unit have a drain pump?

Pump-equipped units can drain uphill. Gravity-only units need the hose to slope down.

Check your owner's manual or the unit label for "pump" or "continuous drain." Pump: proceed to pump check. No pump: confirm the hose slopes downward (at least 1 inch per foot) and is not clogged.

You can change your answer later.

Does the hose slope down and is it clear?

Gravity drain requires downward slope. Clogs block flow.

Confirm the hose slopes downhill from the unit to the drain. Check for kinks and low spots. Disconnect the hose and flush the outlet and hose with water to clear clogs. Good: slope correct, no clogs—water drains. Bad: fix slope or clear clogs, then retest.

You can change your answer later.

Fix slope and clear clogs

Reposition the unit or hose so the outlet is higher than the drain. Flush the outlet and hose with water. Clear debris with a pipe cleaner or brush if needed. Reconnect and test. If it still does not drain, call a technician.

Does the pump run when the pan fills?

The float switch triggers the pump. A stuck float or failed pump prevents drainage.

Listen for the pump when the bucket area fills. Pump runs but no water: pump or inlet clogged—clear inlet, or pump has failed (call a technician). Pump does not run: float switch may be stuck—free it and test. Good: pump runs and water moves. Bad: pump runs but no water—call a technician.

You can change your answer later.

Check float and pump or call a pro

Check the float switch—it should move freely. If stuck, free it and test. If the pump runs but no water moves, the pump has failed—call a technician. Pump replacement usually requires disassembly.

Drain is working

Water flows from the unit to the drain. Monitor for a few days. If drainage stops again, recheck the hose for kinks or clogs.

Frequently asked questions

Why would a dehumidifier run but not drain?
Common causes: drain plug still in place, hose not connected or kinked, hose does not slope downward for gravity drain, clog in the hose or outlet, or a failed drain pump (on pump-equipped models). Check the hose and outlet first.
Can I fix a dehumidifier that will not drain myself?
Yes. Most drain issues are hose-related—remove the plug, connect the hose, confirm downward slope, and clear clogs. Pump-equipped models: you can check the pump inlet and float switch; pump replacement often requires a technician.
When should I call a technician for a dehumidifier that will not drain?
Call a technician if the drain pump runs but no water moves (pump failure), you have cleared the hose and outlet and it still does not drain, or you are not comfortable working with the unit.
