Fix a download that fails

We'll check the URL and connection, rule out antivirus and firewall blocking, then isolate the cause—corrupt file, server error, or client blocking—or escalation with evidence.

What you'll need
  • The download URL or source
  • Access to modem and router (to power-cycle)
  • Ethernet cable (optional; helps rule out Wi‑Fi)

Steps

Goal: Check the URL and connection, then rule out antivirus and client issues.

  • Confirm the download URL is valid and not expired. Try it in a new tab. A 404 or “expired” means request a new link.
  • Good: URL works. Bad: URL is invalid—get a new link. Proceed to Antivirus and firewall if the URL is fine.

Antivirus and firewall

Goal: Antivirus can quarantine or block downloads. Firewall can block the connection.

  • Check antivirus quarantine or Protection history. If the file was quarantined, restore it if safe or add an exception.
  • Good: File was quarantined—restore or add exception. Bad: Not quarantined—proceed to Ethernet.

Ethernet vs Wi‑Fi

Goal: Wi‑Fi drops can produce corrupt or incomplete files. Ethernet is more stable.

  • Connect with an Ethernet cable to the router. Retry the download.
  • Good: Download completes on Ethernet—use Ethernet for large downloads. Bad: Still fails—check disk space, power-cycle, then escalate.

Escalate

Goal: When basic steps are done but downloads still fail, hand off with evidence.

Capture: URL, exact error message, whether the file was quarantined, whether Ethernet helps, and what you tried. Contact the source or your ISP.

Verification

  • The download completes and the file opens or runs correctly.
  • If the source provides a checksum, it matches the downloaded file.
  • No “corrupt” or “incomplete” errors when opening the file.

Escalation ladder

Work from the device outward. Stop when the problem is fixed.

  1. URL and retry Confirm the URL is valid; retry the download.
  2. Antivirus and firewall Check quarantine; add exception if safe.
  3. Ethernet and disk space Use Ethernet for stability; check disk space.
  4. Power-cycle Power-cycle modem and router; retry.
  5. Escalate with evidence Capture URL, error message, antivirus status; contact support.

What to capture if you need help

Before calling support or posting for help, have these ready. It speeds everything up.

  • Download URL
  • Exact error message
  • Whether the file was quarantined by antivirus
  • Whether Ethernet helps
  • Steps already tried

Is the download URL valid and not expired?

Some links expire. A 404 or "expired" means the link is bad.

Try the URL in a new tab. Check for 404 or "expired" message. Valid: proceed to antivirus. Invalid: request a new link from the source.

You can change your answer later.

Get a new download link

The URL is expired or invalid. Contact the source for a new link. Do not retry the old URL.

Was the file quarantined by antivirus?

Antivirus can quarantine or delete downloads it considers suspicious.

Check antivirus quarantine or Protection history. Quarantined: restore if safe or add an exception for the download folder. Not quarantined: proceed to connection.

You can change your answer later.

Restore or add exception

Restore the file from quarantine if you trust the source. Or add an exception for the download folder. Do not disable antivirus permanently.

Does the download fail or produce a corrupt file? Can you try Ethernet?

Wi‑Fi drops can cause incomplete or corrupt downloads.

Connect with an Ethernet cable to the router. Retry the download. Ethernet works: Wi‑Fi was unstable—use Ethernet for large downloads. Ethernet fails too: check disk space and power-cycle.

You can change your answer later.

Use Ethernet for large downloads

Wi‑Fi was unstable. Use Ethernet when possible. If you must use Wi‑Fi, move closer to the router and close other traffic.

Do you have disk space? Have you power-cycled?

Full disk or stuck connection can cause failures.

Check free disk space. Power-cycle modem and router (off 60 sec, on). Retry. Good: download succeeds. Bad: escalate with URL, error message, and steps tried.

You can change your answer later.

Download fixed

Disk space or power-cycle fixed it. If the source provides a checksum, verify the file.

Escalate with evidence

Capture: URL, exact error message, whether file was quarantined, whether Ethernet helps. Contact the source or your ISP.

Frequently asked questions

Why would a download fail?
Common causes: expired or invalid URL, antivirus quarantining the file, connection drop during transfer, insufficient disk space, or server error. Check the URL first, then antivirus and connection.
Can antivirus block a download?
Yes. Antivirus can quarantine or delete a file it considers suspicious. Check the antivirus quarantine or logs. Add an exception for the download folder or the specific file type if it is safe.
What if the download is corrupt or incomplete?
An interrupted connection can produce a partial or corrupt file. Use Ethernet for stability. Retry the download. If the source provides a checksum (MD5, SHA), verify the file after download.
