What you'll need
  • Screwdriver set (Phillips and flathead)
  • Replacement belt or idler pulley (if tests show a fault)
  • Vent brush or vacuum (for lint cleaning)

Steps

Goal: Confirm the vent fan does not run, then check lint, belt, blower wheel, and power.

  • Run a timed dry cycle. Feel the exhaust at the vent. If no airflow, the blower or vent is the fault.
  • Good: No airflow—proceed to Check lint.
  • Bad: Airflow present—vent fan is working. No action needed.

Check lint

Goal: Rule out lint blockage—a severe clog can stall the blower.

  • Unplug the dryer. Disconnect the vent hose. Check for lint buildup in the hose and duct.
  • Clean the lint screen, vent hose, and wall duct. See fix-dryer-vent-is-clogged for full cleaning steps.
  • Good: Vent was blocked—clean and test. The blower may run now.
  • Bad: Vent was clear—proceed to Check belt and blower.

Check belt and blower

Goal: Check the belt, idler pulley, and blower wheel on belt-driven dryers.

  • Open the dryer per your model. Check your owner’s manual or search “[brand] [model] dryer belt replacement” for disassembly steps.
  • Check the belt for breaks or wear. Check the idler pulley—it should spin freely. Replace if broken or seized.
  • Access the blower wheel. Spin it by hand. Remove any lint. If jammed, clear it and test.
  • For inline boosters: confirm power, plug, and that the vent is clear. Some boosters run when they detect airflow.
  • Good: You found and fixed the fault. Reassemble and test.
  • Bad: Blower motor has failed—call a pro.

When to get help

Call a pro if:

  • The blower motor has failed (no hum, no spin after clearing lint and checking the belt).
  • The belt is broken and you are not comfortable replacing it.
  • The dryer makes grinding or burning smells.
  • An inline booster still does not run after you have checked power and the vent.

Do not work on the dryer with power on.

Verification

  • The dryer runs and warm air exits the vent.
  • No grinding or unusual noise from the blower.
  • The belt (if replaced) drives the drum and blower.
  • An inline booster (if present) runs when the dryer runs.

Escalation ladder

Work from the device outward. Stop when the problem is fixed.

  1. Confirm symptom Verify no airflow at the vent when the dryer runs.
  2. Lint Clean lint screen, vent hose, and duct; reconnect and test.
  3. Belt and idler Check belt and idler pulley on belt-driven dryers.
  4. Blower wheel Check blower wheel for lint jam or damage.
  5. Call a pro Motor failed, belt replacement needed, or inline booster still not running—call a pro.

What to capture if you need help

Before calling support or posting for help, have these ready. It speeds everything up.

  • Dryer type (belt-driven or direct-drive)
  • Whether lint was cleaned
  • Belt and idler pulley status
  • Blower wheel condition
  • Inline booster power and vent status
  • Steps already tried

Does the dryer run but no air moves through the vent?

Run a timed dry cycle. Feel the exhaust at the vent. No airflow means the blower or vent is the fault.

Run a timed dry cycle. Feel the exhaust at the back of the dryer or at the exterior cap. No airflow: blower or vent fault. Airflow present: vent fan is working—no problem. Dryer does not run: different problem—see fix-dryer-will-not-start.

You can change your answer later.

No action needed

The dryer vent fan runs. No further action required.

Is the vent clear of lint?

A severe lint blockage can stall the blower. Clean the lint screen, hose, and duct.

Unplug the dryer. Disconnect the vent hose. Check for lint buildup. Clean the lint screen, hose, and duct. See fix-dryer-vent-is-clogged for full steps. Clear: proceed to belt. Was blocked: clean and test—blower may run now.

You can change your answer later.

Clean vent and test

Clean the lint screen, vent hose, and duct. Reconnect and test. The blower should run if lint was stalling it.

Is the belt intact and the idler pulley free? (belt-driven dryers)

Belt-driven dryers use a belt for the drum and blower. A broken belt or seized idler stops both.

Open the dryer per your model. Check the belt and idler pulley. Good: belt intact, idler spins freely. Bad: belt broken or idler seized—replace and test. Direct-drive: skip to blower wheel.

You can change your answer later.

Replace belt or idler and test

Replace the belt or idler pulley with an exact match. Reassemble and test. The blower should run. If not comfortable, call a pro.

Is the blower wheel clear and spinning freely?

Lint can jam the blower wheel. A damaged wheel or failed motor stops airflow.

With power off, access the blower wheel. Spin it by hand. Remove any lint. Clear and spins: motor may have failed—call a pro. Was jammed: clear and test. Inline booster: check power and vent—see inline booster steps.

You can change your answer later.

Clear blower and test

Clear lint from the blower wheel. Reassemble and test. If the motor hums but the blower does not spin, the motor may have failed—call a pro.

Call a pro

Call a pro if the blower motor has failed, the belt is broken and you are not comfortable replacing it, the dryer makes grinding or burning smells, or an inline booster still does not run after checking power and the vent.

Frequently asked questions

Why would a dryer vent fan not run?
Common causes: lint blockage stalling the blower, broken belt (belt-driven dryers), failed blower motor, or—for inline boosters—no power or blocked vent. Check lint and power first, then the belt and motor.
Can I fix a dryer vent fan that will not run myself?
Yes, for lint cleaning and power checks. Unplug the dryer before any repair. Belt replacement on belt-driven dryers is possible with basic tools, but blower or motor replacement often needs a technician. Inline boosters: check the plug and vent.
When should I call a pro for a dryer vent fan?
Call a pro if the blower motor has failed, the belt is broken and you are not comfortable replacing it, the dryer makes grinding or burning smells, or an inline booster still does not run after you have checked power and the vent.
