Steps

Goal: Confirm ONT power, inspect the fiber connector, verify bend radius, and rule out upstream issues.

  • Confirm the ONT is plugged in and the power light is on.
  • Inspect the fiber connector for dust, scratches, or damage. Do not touch the end face.
  • Reseat the connector firmly—pull straight out, align, push in until it clicks.
  • Check the fiber cable for sharp bends or kinks. The bend radius matters.
  • Good: The PON or link light comes on. Bad: Still no light—call your ISP.

Check ONT power

Goal: Confirm the ONT has power before checking the fiber.

  • Check that the ONT is plugged in and the power light is on.
  • Test the outlet with another device. Confirm the power adapter is firmly connected.
  • Good: Power light solid. Bad: No power—try different outlet or adapter, or call support.

Inspect fiber connector

Goal: Rule out connector issues—dust, damage, or loose seating.

  • Look at the fiber connector where it plugs into the ONT. Check for dust or visible damage on the end face.
  • Do not touch the end face with your fingers—skin oils and dust block light.
  • Reseat the connector: pull straight out, align, push in until it clicks. Wait 30–60 seconds.
  • If dusty, use a fiber cleaning pen or lint-free wipe designed for fiber. Reseat after cleaning.
  • Good: Connector clean and seated; PON light may come on. Bad: Connector damaged—call ISP.

Check bend radius

Goal: Verify the fiber cable has no sharp bends that attenuate or break the signal.

  • Trace the fiber from the ONT to where it enters the wall or enclosure.
  • The minimum bend radius is usually about 1.5 inches (38 mm) or more.
  • Straighten any sharp bends or kinks gently. Reseat the connector and wait for the PON light.
  • Good: No sharp bends; signal can pass. Bad: Kinks or tight loops—straighten and retest.

When to get help

Call your ISP if:

  • The ONT has power, the connector is clean and seated, the fiber has no sharp bends, and the PON light still does not come on.
  • The fiber may be cut, the upstream equipment may be down, or the demarcation may need service.

Verification

  • The ONT power light is solid.
  • The PON or link light is on (solid or green) after reseating the connector.
  • No sharp bends or kinks in the fiber cable.
  • The fiber connector is clean and firmly seated.

Escalation ladder

Work from the device outward. Stop when the problem is fixed.

  1. ONT power Confirm ONT is plugged in and power light is on.
  2. Fiber connector Inspect connector for dust or damage; reseat firmly.
  3. Bend radius Check fiber cable for sharp bends or kinks.
  4. Clean connector Use fiber cleaning pen or lint-free wipe if dusty.
  5. Call ISP Upstream or fiber endpoint issue—ISP must check the line.

What to capture if you need help

Before calling support or posting for help, have these ready. It speeds everything up.

  • ONT model and status light states
  • Whether the fiber connector was reseated
  • Whether the connector was cleaned
  • Steps already tried

Is the ONT power light on?

No power means no fiber link. Check outlet and adapter first.

Check that the ONT is plugged in and the power light is on. Good: power light solid. Bad: no power—check outlet and adapter.

You can change your answer later.

Check power outlet and adapter

Outlet or adapter fault can prevent ONT from powering.

Test the outlet with another device. Confirm the power adapter is firmly connected to the ONT and the wall. Try a different outlet if needed. Good: ONT powers on. Bad: still no power—call ISP or equipment support.

Is the fiber connector clean and firmly seated?

Dust or loose seating blocks the light signal.

Inspect the fiber connector where it plugs into the ONT. Check for dust or damage. Do not touch the end face. Reseat the connector firmly—pull straight out, align, push in until it clicks. Good: connector clean and seated. Bad: dusty or damaged—clean with fiber pen or call ISP if damaged.

You can change your answer later.

Reseat and clean connector

If dusty, use a fiber cleaning pen or lint-free fiber wipe. Reseat the connector firmly. Wait 1–2 minutes for the PON light. Good: PON light comes on. Bad: still no light—check bend radius, then call ISP.

Does the fiber cable have sharp bends or kinks?

Fiber has a minimum bend radius. Sharp bends can break or attenuate the signal.

Trace the fiber from the ONT to where it enters the wall. Check the bend radius—usually 1.5 inches (38 mm) or more. Good: no sharp bends. Bad: kinks or tight loops—straighten gently, reseat connector, wait for PON light.

You can change your answer later.

Straighten fiber and reseat

Straighten any sharp bends gently. Reseat the connector. Wait 1–2 minutes. Good: PON light comes on. Bad: still no light—call ISP; upstream or fiber endpoint issue.

Call your ISP

ONT has power, connector is clean and seated, fiber has no sharp bends, but PON light still off. The fiber may be cut, upstream equipment may be down, or the demarcation may need service. Call your ISP with ONT model and status light states.
