Steps
Goal: Confirm the guest network is enabled, check the password and isolation, then verify the device connects and gets internet.
- Log into the router and confirm the guest network is enabled. The guest network has its own SSID and password.
- On the guest device, scan for networks. The guest SSID should appear. Enter the guest password.
- Good: Device connects and has internet. Bad: Connects but no internet—check guest isolation. No connect—wrong password or DHCP issue.
Check settings
Goal: Confirm the guest network is enabled and configured correctly.
- Log into the router (192.168.1.1 or 192.168.0.1). Open Guest Network or Wireless settings.
- Confirm the guest network is on. Note the guest SSID and password—they differ from the main network.
- Check guest isolation—if too strict, it may block internet. Set to allow internet when guests need web access.
- Good: Guest network enabled, SSID and password set, isolation allows internet. Bad: Guest off or misconfigured—fix and save.
Device connection
Goal: Get the guest device connected to the guest network with internet.
- On the guest device, forget any saved guest network and reconnect. Enter the guest password.
- Power-cycle the router if the guest SSID does not appear or the device will not connect.
- Check the router client list—the guest device should appear with an IP when connected.
- Good: Device connects and has internet. Bad: Still fails—disable and re-enable the guest network, then retest.
When to get help
If the guest network still will not work after re-enabling and power-cycling, contact the router manufacturer. Have ready: router model, guest network settings, and what you tried.
Verification
- The guest device sees the guest SSID and connects with the correct password.
- The guest device has internet access (e.g. opens a website).
- The guest device does not see or access the main network (isolation works).
Escalation ladder
Work from the device outward. Stop when the problem is fixed.
- Enable guest network Confirm guest network is on in router settings.
- Check SSID and password Verify guest SSID and password match router.
- Restart and reconnect Power-cycle router; forget and reconnect on device.
- Re-enable guest network Disable and re-enable guest network in router.
- Call support Manufacturer support with router model and steps tried.
What to capture if you need help
Before calling support or posting for help, have these ready. It speeds everything up.
