Steps
Goal: Confirm the gutter guard is clogged, clean it and the gutter, and restore flow.
- Check during or after rain. Water runs over the gutter guard instead of through it, or pools on top.
- Good: Water overflows the guard—guard clogged. Proceed to Clean guard.
- Bad: Guard is clear but water does not flow—gutter or downspout may be clogged; see fix-gutter-is-clogged.
Clean guard
Goal: Remove debris from the guard surface so water can flow through.
- Use a sturdy ladder on level ground. Have a spotter. Remove leaves and debris from the guard with a brush or gloved hand. Work from the ends toward the downspout.
- Good: Guard surface clear. Proceed to Lift and clean gutter.
- Bad: Cannot safely access—call a gutter professional.
Lift and clean gutter
Goal: Clean the gutter channel under the guard and clear the downspout.
- If the guard lifts out, set it aside. Use a gutter scoop to remove debris from the gutter. Work toward the downspout.
- Clear the downspout opening—debris often clogs where the gutter meets the downspout. Flush the downspout with a hose if needed.
- Good: Gutter and downspout clear. Run a hose over the guard to verify flow.
- Bad: Guard does not lift—clean from above; flush with a hose. If flow does not restore, see fix-gutter-is-clogged.
When to get help
Call a gutter professional if:
- You cannot safely access the gutter (two stories or higher, or not comfortable on a ladder).
- The guard is damaged or no longer fits.

- Cleaning did not restore flow.
Verification
- Water flows through the guard into the gutter during rain or when running a hose.

Frequently asked questions
- Why do gutter guards get clogged?
- Leaves, pine needles, and debris accumulate on the guard surface. Fine debris can block the slots or holes. In heavy rain, water runs over the guard instead of through it. Clean guards at least twice a year—spring and fall.
- Can I clean a clogged gutter guard myself?
- Yes. Remove debris from the guard surface with a brush or by hand. If the guard lifts out, clean the gutter channel underneath. Use a sturdy ladder and spotter. If the gutter is two stories or higher, consider calling a gutter professional.
- When should I replace a gutter guard?
- Replace the guard if it is damaged, bent, or no longer fits. If it clogs constantly despite cleaning, consider a different style (e.g. micro-mesh vs screen) or more frequent cleaning. A gutter professional can recommend options.
