Steps

Goal: Confirm the symptom, check cellular data and signal, then isolate the cause—plan, APN, data limits, or client connection.

  • Turn on the mobile hotspot and try to connect a laptop or another phone.
  • Good: You know the exact symptom—client cannot connect, connects but no internet, or connects then drops. Proceed to Check cellular data and signal.
  • Bad: Unclear—test with a known-good client device to confirm.

Check cellular data and signal

Goal: Rule out cellular data off and weak signal before digging into plan or APN.

  • Open Settings > Cellular (or Mobile Data) and confirm cellular data is enabled. Hotspot will not share if cellular data is off.
  • Look at the signal bars. Weak signal (one bar or none) can prevent the hotspot from sharing. Move to a window or higher floor if indoors.
  • Good: Cellular data is on and you have at least two bars. Proceed to Plan and data limits.
  • Bad: Cellular data off—turn it on. No signal—improve location or call your carrier.

Plan and data limits

Goal: Confirm your plan includes tethering and you have not hit data limits.

  • Log into your carrier app or account. Check plan details for mobile hotspot or tethering. Many carriers require a plan add-on.
  • Check usage in the carrier app. Some plans cap hotspot data separately; hitting the cap can stop sharing.
  • Good: Plan includes tethering and you have remaining hotspot data. Proceed to APN settings.
  • Bad: Plan does not include tethering—add the feature or upgrade. Hit data limit—wait for reset or upgrade.

APN settings

Goal: Verify APN settings match your carrier so the hotspot can use the network.

  • Open Settings > Cellular > Cellular Data Options > Cellular Network (or Mobile Data > Access Point Names).
  • Search “[carrier name] APN settings” for the correct values. Compare to what is on the phone.
  • Good: APN matches your carrier. Proceed to power-cycle and reconnect.
  • Bad: APN wrong or missing—update per carrier instructions, restart the phone, then retest.

Power-cycle and reconnect

Goal: Clear stuck state on the phone and client device.

  • Restart the phone—power off, wait 10 seconds, power on. Turn the hotspot back on.
  • On the client device, forget the hotspot Wi‑Fi network. Reconnect and enter the hotspot password.
  • Good: The client connects and gets internet. You are done.
  • Bad: Still will not share—call your carrier with what you have tried.

When to get help

Call your carrier if:

  • Cellular data does not work on the phone.
  • Your plan does not include tethering and you need to add it.
  • APN is correct, you have signal and plan, but the hotspot still will not share.
  • You have hit hotspot data limits and need a reset or upgrade.

Verification

  • The client device connects to the hotspot Wi‑Fi network.
  • The client can load websites and use apps that need internet.
  • Signal strength on the phone is at least two bars.
  • Cellular data is on and tethering is included in your plan.

Escalation ladder

Work from the device outward. Stop when the problem is fixed.

  1. Cellular data and signal Confirm cellular data is on and you have at least two bars of signal.
  2. Plan and limits Check that your plan includes tethering and you have not hit hotspot data limits.
  3. APN Verify APN settings match your carrier.
  4. Power-cycle and reconnect Restart the phone; forget and reconnect the hotspot on the client device.
  5. Call carrier Carrier can confirm tethering on the line, check blocks, and verify APN.

What to capture if you need help

Before calling support or posting for help, have these ready. It speeds everything up.

  • Phone model and carrier
  • Whether cellular data works on the phone (browsing, apps)
  • Signal strength (bars)
  • Plan name and whether tethering is included
  • APN settings (screenshot or values)
  • Steps already tried

Does cellular data work on the phone when you browse or use apps?

If the phone has no internet on cellular, the hotspot cannot share. Test by opening a website or app that uses data.

Turn off Wi‑Fi on the phone so it uses cellular only. Open a website or app. Good: data works—the phone has a connection; the issue is hotspot-specific. Bad: no data on the phone—fix cellular first (signal, plan, APN).

You can change your answer later.

Fix cellular first

Check signal strength, cellular data toggle, and APN. If cellular does not work on the phone, the hotspot cannot share. See Check cellular data and signal.

Do you have at least two bars of signal?

Weak signal can prevent the hotspot from sharing even if the phone has some data.

Look at the signal indicator. Move to a window or higher floor if needed. Good: two or more bars—proceed. Bad: one bar or none—improve signal or move; weak signal often blocks hotspot.

You can change your answer later.

Does your plan include tethering or mobile hotspot?

Many carriers require a plan add-on for hotspot. Check the carrier app or account.

Log into your carrier app or account. Check plan details for tethering or mobile hotspot. Good: plan includes it—proceed to APN. Bad: plan does not include it—add the feature or upgrade; call your carrier.

You can change your answer later.

Are APN settings correct for your carrier?

Wrong APN can block hotspot. Search "[carrier name] APN settings" for correct values.

Open Settings > Cellular > Cellular Data Options > Cellular Network (or Mobile Data > Access Point Names). Compare to your carrier APN. Good: APN matches—proceed to power-cycle. Bad: APN wrong or missing—update per carrier, then retest.

You can change your answer later.

Update APN and retest

Enter the correct APN from your carrier. Restart the phone. Turn hotspot on and try connecting a client. See APN settings.

Power-cycle and reconnect

Restart the phone. On the client device, forget the hotspot network, then reconnect and enter the password. Good: client connects and gets internet—done. Bad: still will not share—check data limits; if not the cause, call carrier.

You can change your answer later.

Hotspot is sharing

The client device connects and has internet. You are done.

Call your carrier

Call your carrier if: cellular does not work on the phone; plan does not include tethering; APN is correct but hotspot still will not share; or you have hit data limits. They can confirm tethering on the line, check blocks, and verify APN. See When to get help.

Frequently asked questions

Why would my hotspot turn on but not share internet?
Common causes are cellular data off, weak signal, plan does not include tethering, APN misconfigured, or data limit reached. Check cellular data and signal first, then confirm your plan allows hotspot.
Can I use a hotspot if my plan does not include tethering?
No. Many carriers require a plan add-on or specific tier for mobile hotspot. Check your plan in the carrier app or call them to confirm tethering is enabled.
What are APN settings and why do they matter for hotspot?
APN (Access Point Name) tells your phone how to connect to the carrier network. Wrong or missing APN settings can block data, including hotspot. Your carrier provides the correct APN—search "[carrier name] APN settings" or check their support site.
