Steps

Goal: Get iCloud Backup working by checking sign-in, storage, Wi‑Fi, and backup settings.

  • Open Settings → [your name] → iCloud → iCloud Backup.
  • Good: “Backup Failed” or backup never completes—proceed to Check sign-in and storage.
  • Bad: Backup runs but is slow—wait for completion or check Wi‑Fi speed.

Check sign-in and storage

Goal: Confirm your Apple ID is active and has space for backup.

  • Settings → tap [your name] at the top. If you see “Sign in to your iPhone” then sign in with your Apple ID.
  • Tap iCloud. Check storage. When storage is full, backup blocks. Tap Manage Account Storage to see what uses space.
  • Good: Signed in, space OK. Proceed to Check Wi‑Fi and backup settings.
  • Bad: Sign in or free storage. Delete old backups or turn off apps in backup.

Check Wi‑Fi and backup settings

Goal: Rule out network and settings issues before changing backup content.

  • Settings → Wi‑Fi. Confirm you are connected. iCloud Backup does not run on cellular.
  • Plug in the device. Lock the screen. iCloud Backup runs when plugged in, locked, and on Wi‑Fi.
  • Settings → [your name] → iCloud → iCloud Backup. Confirm “Back Up This iPhone” (or iPad) is on.
  • Good: Wi‑Fi connected, plugged in, backup on. Tap Back Up Now. Bad: Connect to Wi‑Fi, plug in, or turn on backup.

Reduce backup size

Goal: Free space when storage is full or backup is too large.

  • Settings → [your name] → iCloud → Manage Account Storage → Backups.
  • Tap [this device]. Tap Show All Apps. Turn off apps you do not need backed up.
  • Tap Backups in the top left. Tap an old device backup. Delete Backup. Confirm.
  • Good: Space freed. Retry Back Up Now. Bad: Still full—contact Apple support.

Restart and retry

Goal: Clear stuck state with a restart.

  • Hold the side button and either volume button. Slide to power off. Wait 30 seconds. Turn the device back on.
  • Sign in to iCloud if prompted. Plug in, connect to Wi‑Fi, lock the screen.
  • Settings → [your name] → iCloud → iCloud Backup → Back Up Now.
  • Good: Backup starts or completes. Bad: Error persists—contact Apple support.

When to get help

Contact Apple support if:

  • Backup fails after you have checked sign-in, storage, Wi‑Fi, and settings.
  • You have critical data and need help recovering it.

Check Apple System Status (support.apple.com/systemstatus) for iCloud outages first. Provide the error message and steps you have already tried.

Verification

  • Settings → [your name] → iCloud → iCloud Backup shows “Last successful backup” with a recent time.
  • No “Backup Failed” or error message.
  • Backup size and storage used match your expectations.

Escalation ladder

Work from the device outward. Stop when the problem is fixed.

  1. Sign-in and storage Confirm signed in; check iCloud storage in Settings.
  2. Wi‑Fi and plug-in Confirm Wi‑Fi connected; plug in and lock device.
  3. Backup settings Turn on iCloud Backup; turn off unneeded apps.
  4. Free space Delete old backups; reduce backup size.
  5. Restart and retry Restart device; retry Back Up Now.
  6. Contact support Check Apple System Status; contact Apple support.
