Steps

Goal: Check layout, Num Lock, and modifiers—then isolate the cause.

  • Run through layout, Num Lock, and modifier keys first.
  • Good: You find the cause and fix it. Proceed to Verification.
  • Bad: Proceed to Check layout.

Check layout and language

Goal: Confirm the correct keyboard layout and input language are selected.

  • Check the language indicator in the taskbar (Windows) or menu bar (Mac). Click it to see the current layout.
  • Open Settings, Time & language, Language & region (Windows) or System Preferences, Keyboard, Input Sources (Mac). Add or select the correct layout—QWERTY, AZERTY, QWERTZ.
  • Good: Correct layout selected. Proceed to Check Num Lock.
  • Bad: Wrong layout—change it and test.

Check Num Lock

Goal: Confirm Num Lock is off when typing letters.

  • Press Num Lock (or Fn+Num Lock on laptops) to toggle. When Num Lock is on, the number pad or some letter keys may produce numbers.
  • Good: Num Lock is off. Proceed to Modifier keys.
  • Bad: Num Lock was on—turn it off and test.

Check modifier keys

Goal: Confirm no modifier key is stuck.

  • Tap Shift, Alt, Ctrl, and Fn to release any stuck key. A stuck modifier changes what other keys produce.
  • Good: No modifier stuck. Proceed to Update driver.
  • Bad: A key was stuck—release it and test.

Update driver (Windows)

Goal: Update the keyboard driver when layout and Num Lock are correct but keys still type wrong.

  • Test in Notepad or TextEdit. If layout and Num Lock are correct and keys still type wrong, try updating the driver.
  • Device Manager, expand Keyboards. Right-click the keyboard, Update driver, Search automatically. Restart if prompted.
  • Good: The keyboard types correctly. You are done.
  • Bad: Keys still type wrong or keyboard has a yellow warning—see When to get help.

Escalation ladder

Work from the device outward. Stop when the problem is fixed.
