Steps
Goal: Confirm the correct code, check for lockout, clean the keypad, then power-cycle or call a pro.
- Confirm you have the correct master code or user code. Check paperwork or the alarm company.
- Good: Code confirmed. Proceed to Confirm code and lockout.
- Bad: Unsure—call the alarm company to verify. See When to get help.
Confirm code and lockout
Goal: Rule out wrong code and lockout.
- Confirm the code with your alarm company or paperwork.
- If the keypad is in lockout, wait 15–30 minutes. Do not keep trying.
- Enter the code slowly. Confirm each digit registers.
Clean and power-cycle
Goal: Clean the keypad and power-cycle the panel.
- Wipe the keypad with a dry, soft cloth. Dirt or moisture can cause keys to not register.
- Power-cycle the control panel: turn off the breaker for 30 seconds, then restore power.
- Try the code again. If it still will not accept, call your alarm company.
When to get help
- Call your alarm company if you have confirmed the code, waited out the lockout, cleaned the keypad, and power-cycled, and it still will not accept the code.
- Do not open the control panel—that can trigger a tamper alarm.
Verification
- The keypad accepts the code and the system arms or disarms.
- No lockout or wrong-code errors.
- All keys respond when pressed.

Frequently asked questions
- Why would a keypad not accept my code?
- Common causes: wrong code (master vs user), lockout from too many wrong attempts, dirty or stuck keys, or a faulty keypad. Confirm the correct code and check for lockout first.
- How long does a keypad lockout last?
- Most systems lock for 15–30 minutes after several wrong attempts. Wait for the lockout to expire, or call your alarm company to clear it. Do not keep trying—that can extend the lockout.
- When should I call my alarm company for a keypad?
- Call if you have confirmed the correct code, waited out the lockout, cleaned the keypad, and power-cycled, and it still will not accept the code. The keypad or panel may need reprogramming.
