Steps
Goal: Rule out brightness and display mode, then isolate backlight, cable, or panel failure.
- Confirm the laptop is on—check LEDs, fans. If no power, see Fix a laptop that will not charge.
- Good: Laptop has power. Proceed to Check brightness and wake.
- Bad: No power—check charging and power adapter.
Check brightness and wake
Goal: Rule out zero brightness and sleep.
- Press Fn+brightness up. Move the mouse or press a key to wake from sleep.
- Press Fn+F4 (or similar) to cycle display modes—the laptop may be in external-only.
- Good: Screen comes on. If not, try an external monitor.
- Bad: Still black—connect an external monitor.
Try external monitor
Goal: Determine whether the GPU works and the internal display failed.
- Connect an external monitor via HDMI or USB-C. If it works, the internal display or cable has failed.
- If the external also shows nothing, update display drivers and try Safe Mode.
- Good: You have isolated the issue. External works = internal display repair needed—call a technician.
- Bad: External does not work—GPU or driver issue.
