Steps

Goal: Rule out brightness and display mode, then isolate backlight, cable, or panel failure.

Check brightness and wake

Goal: Rule out zero brightness and sleep.

  • Press Fn+brightness up. Move the mouse or press a key to wake from sleep.
  • Press Fn+F4 (or similar) to cycle display modes—the laptop may be in external-only.
  • Good: Screen comes on. If not, try an external monitor.
  • Bad: Still black—connect an external monitor.

Try external monitor

Goal: Determine whether the GPU works and the internal display failed.

  • Connect an external monitor via HDMI or USB-C. If it works, the internal display or cable has failed.
  • If the external also shows nothing, update display drivers and try Safe Mode.
  • Good: You have isolated the issue. External works = internal display repair needed—call a technician.
  • Bad: External does not work—GPU or driver issue.

When to get help

Call a technician if:

  • The external monitor works but the internal screen stays black.
  • You see a faint image with a flashlight (backlight failed).

Opening the laptop to repair the display cable or backlight requires a professional.

Verification

  • The internal screen displays the desktop.
  • Brightness is set correctly.
  • Display mode is laptop or duplicate (not external-only).

Escalation ladder

Work from the device outward. Stop when the problem is fixed.

  1. Brightness and wake Fn+brightness up; wake from sleep; Fn+F4 for display mode.
  2. External monitor Connect external—if it works, internal display or cable failed.
  3. Power cycle and drivers Cold restart; update display drivers.
  4. Call a pro External works, internal black—display cable or backlight needs repair.
