Steps
Goal: Rule out brightness and auto-brightness settings, then isolate hardware.
- Raise the brightness slider to maximum. Turn off True Tone and Ambient Light Compensation.
- Good: Display bright. Proceed to Verification.
- Bad: Still dim. Proceed to Turn off auto-brightness.
Raise brightness
Goal: Confirm brightness is at maximum.
- Press F1/F2 or open Control Center and drag the brightness slider up. Confirm it is at max.
- Good: Display is bright. Proceed to Verification.
- Bad: At max but still dim. Proceed to Turn off auto-brightness.
Turn off auto-brightness
Goal: Disable True Tone and other auto-adjustments.
- System Settings, Displays. Turn off True Tone. Turn off Ambient Light Compensation if available. System Settings, Battery—turn off “Slightly dim the display when on battery power.”
- Good: Display brighter. Proceed to Verification.
- Bad: Still dim at max. Reset NVRAM (Intel) or see When to get help.
When to get help
Call Apple or a technician if:
- The display stays dim at full brightness.
- The display flickers or has dark spots.
- An external display is bright but the built-in is dim.
Verification
- Brightness slider is at the desired level.
- True Tone and Ambient Light Compensation are off if they caused dimming.
- Display is readable in normal lighting.
Escalation ladder
Work from the device outward. Stop when the problem is fixed.
- Brightness Raise brightness slider; turn off True Tone and Ambient Light Compensation.
- Battery and power Disable battery dimming; turn off Low Power Mode.
- NVRAM and update Reset NVRAM (Intel); update macOS.
