When to get help

Call Apple or a technician if:

  • You cannot fix ownership.
  • The system folder has corrupted permissions.
  • You get permission errors on system files.

Verification

  • You can open and modify the file or folder.
  • No “Permission denied” errors.

Escalation ladder

Work from the device outward. Stop when the problem is fixed.

  1. Admin and lock Confirm admin; uncheck Locked in Get Info.
  2. Ownership Get Info, Sharing & Permissions—add your user, Read & Write.
  3. Full Disk Access Grant Full Disk Access to the app in Privacy & Security.

  • Steps already tried:

Is the file or folder locked?

Locked files show permission denied when modifying.

Right-click the file, Get Info. Check "Locked" at the bottom. If checked, uncheck it. Click the lock icon and enter password if needed. Good: lock removed—try again. Bad: not locked—check ownership.

You can change your answer later.

Does your user have Read & Write?

Wrong ownership blocks access.

Get Info, Sharing & Permissions. Add your user with +. Set to Read & Write. Apply to enclosed items if folder. Good: access granted. Bad: if system file, do not change—call a technician.

You can change your answer later.

Is an app showing permission denied?

Apps need Full Disk Access for protected folders.

System Settings, Privacy & Security, Full Disk Access. Add the app. Quit and reopen. Good: app can access files. Bad: if still denied, the file may be in a protected system location.

Permission fixed

You can access the file or folder. You are done.

Frequently asked questions

Why would a Mac show permission denied?
Not an administrator, file is locked, wrong ownership, or app does not have Full Disk Access. Check admin status and file lock first.
Can I fix permission denied on a Mac myself?
Yes. Remove the lock from the file, fix ownership with Get Info, grant Full Disk Access to the app. Use sudo in Terminal only if you know what you are doing.
When should I call a technician for permission issues?
If you cannot fix ownership or the system folder is corrupted. Do not change system file permissions unless you are experienced.
