Steps

Goal: Free disk space used by the Photos library.

  • Enable Optimize Mac Storage in Photos.
  • Empty Recently Deleted.
  • Remove duplicates and export large videos.
  • Move the library to an external drive if needed.

Optimize storage

Goal: Keep originals in iCloud and thumbnails locally.

  • Photos → Settings → iCloud → Optimize Mac Storage.
  • Good: Photos uploads originals and frees local space over time.
  • Bad: iCloud full—see Fix iCloud full.

Remove duplicates and videos

Goal: Delete duplicates and move large videos off the Mac.

  • File → Show Duplicates. Delete duplicates.
  • Export large videos to external drive, then delete from Photos.
  • Good: Library size decreases.
  • Bad: No duplicates or videos—consider moving the library to an external drive.

Verification

  • Photos uses less disk space (check in About This Mac → Storage).
  • Recently Deleted is empty.
