Steps

Goal: Speed up Time Machine backups.

  • Exclude large folders (Cache, node_modules, VMs).
  • Use USB 3 or Thunderbolt instead of USB 2 or Wi‑Fi.
  • Free space on the backup disk.

Exclude large folders

Goal: Stop backing up folders that change often and are huge.

  • Time Machine → Options → Add. Add ~/Library/Caches, node_modules, .git, virtual machine disks.
  • Good: Backup time drops. If not, check connection.
  • Bad: Already excluded—check connection and disk space.

Check connection

Goal: Use a faster link to the backup disk.

  • USB 3 (blue port) or Thunderbolt. For network backup, Ethernet instead of Wi‑Fi.
  • Good: Backup speeds up.
  • Bad: Upgrade cable or port.

When to get help

Call a pro if:

  • The backup disk has hardware errors.
  • You need a custom backup strategy.

Verification

  • Backups complete within a reasonable time (incremental: minutes to an hour).
  • Time Machine menu shows “Backup completed.”
  • No “Backup in progress” stuck for many hours.

Escalation ladder

Work from the device outward. Stop when the problem is fixed.

  1. Exclude folders Add Cache, node_modules, VMs to Time Machine Options.
  2. Faster connection Use USB 3 or Thunderbolt; Ethernet for network backup.
  3. Free disk space Delete old backups or use larger disk.
  4. Call a pro Disk errors or custom backup strategy.

What to capture if you need help

Before calling support or posting for help, have these ready. It speeds everything up.

  • Backup disk connection type (USB 2/3, Thunderbolt, network)
  • Excluded folders
  • Free space on backup disk
  • Steps already tried

Have you excluded large folders?

Cache, node_modules, VMs can add hours.

Time Machine → Options. Add ~/Library/Caches, node_modules, .git, VM disks. Good: excluded—check connection. Bad: already excluded—check disk space and connection.

You can change your answer later.

Exclude large folders

Time Machine → Options → Add. Add Cache, node_modules, virtual machines. Retry backup.

Are you using USB 3 or Thunderbolt?

USB 2 and Wi‑Fi are slow for backup.

Check cable and port. USB 3 is blue; Thunderbolt has lightning icon. For network backup, use Ethernet. Good: faster connection—backup should speed up. Bad: stuck on USB 2 or Wi‑Fi—consider direct USB 3 connection.

You can change your answer later.

Upgrade connection

Use USB 3 or Thunderbolt cable and port. Or connect backup disk via Ethernet if it is a NAS.

Does the backup disk have at least 20% free?

Full disk slows writes.

Check free space. Delete old backups or use larger disk. Good: space freed—backup should complete. Bad: disk healthy—first full backup may just take hours; let it complete.

Frequently asked questions

Why is Time Machine so slow?
Backing up millions of small files, large folders (Cache, node_modules, VMs), slow USB 2 or Wi‑Fi, or a nearly full backup disk. Exclude large folders first.
Can I speed up Time Machine?
Yes. Exclude Cache, node_modules, and virtual machines. Use USB 3 or Thunderbolt. Keep the backup disk from getting full.
When should I use a network backup?
Network backup (NAS, Time Capsule) is convenient but slower than direct USB. For speed, use a directly connected external drive.
