  • Confirm Mac and iPad are compatible.
  • Confirm the same Apple ID on both.
  • Enable Universal Control; place devices side by side.

Check compatibility

Goal: Confirm devices and OS support Universal Control.

  • macOS 12.3+, iPadOS 15.4+. Mac 2016+, iPad with Apple Pencil support.
  • Good: Compatible. Proceed to Enable Universal Control.
  • Bad: Update OS or use different devices.

Enable Universal Control

Goal: Turn on the feature on both devices.

  • Mac: Displays → Advanced → Link keyboard and mouse.
  • iPad: General → AirPlay & Handoff → Cursor and Keyboard.
  • Place devices side by side. Move cursor to the edge.
  • Good: Cursor crosses to the iPad.
  • Bad: Restart both; call a pro if it still fails.

When to get help

  • Devices are compatible, same Apple ID, and Universal Control still fails.

Verification

  • Cursor moves from Mac to iPad when reaching the screen edge.
