Steps

Goal: Rule out power and adapter, then isolate display or startup disk failure.

  • Confirm the power adapter is connected and the LED (if present) is on.
  • Good: Power confirmed. Proceed to Recovery Mode.
  • Bad: No power—try a known-good adapter.

Check power and adapter

Goal: Rule out power fault.

  • Reseat the adapter at the Mac and wall. Try a different outlet. On MagSafe, the LED should be green or orange.
  • If no power with a known-good adapter, the Mac may have a power fault.
  • Good: Power present. Proceed to Recovery Mode.
  • Bad: No power—call Apple or a technician.

Recovery

Goal: Confirm whether the Mac hardware works.

  • Shut down. Power on and hold Command+R until the Recovery utilities appear.
  • If Recovery loads, the startup disk may be corrupted. Run First Aid and reinstall macOS if needed.
  • Good: Recovery loads. Proceed to Disk repair.
  • Bad: Recovery does not load—hardware fault, call a pro.

Disk repair

Goal: Repair or reinstall the startup disk.

  • In Recovery, open Disk Utility. Select the main volume, run First Aid.
  • If First Aid finds errors, reinstall macOS. This preserves your data.
  • Good: First Aid completes, Mac boots.
  • Bad: First Aid fails—disk may be failing, back up if possible and call a pro.

When to get help

Call Apple or a technician if:

  • The Mac has no power with a known-good adapter.
  • Recovery Mode does not load.
  • Apple Diagnostics reports hardware errors.

Verification

  • The Mac powers on and reaches the login screen or desktop.
  • No blank screen or stuck Apple logo.
  • Startup disk is accessible and macOS loads.

Escalation ladder

Work from the device outward. Stop when the problem is fixed.

  1. Power and adapter Confirm adapter connected; try different outlet and adapter.
  2. Recovery Mode Hold Command+R at startup; if Recovery loads, hardware is OK.
  3. Disk and NVRAM Run First Aid; reset NVRAM and SMC on Intel Macs.
  4. Call a pro No power, Recovery fails, or hardware errors in diagnostics.
