Steps
Goal: Rule out Bluetooth off and pairings, then isolate preferences or hardware.
- Confirm Bluetooth is on in System Settings.
- Good: Bluetooth on. Proceed to Remove pairings and re-pair.
- Bad: Turn on Bluetooth first. If it will not turn on, reset SMC.
Check Bluetooth is on
Goal: Rule out Bluetooth disabled.
- Open System Settings, Bluetooth. Confirm Bluetooth is on.
- Good: Bluetooth on. Proceed to Remove pairings and re-pair.
- Bad: If Bluetooth will not turn on, reset SMC.
Remove pairings and re-pair
Goal: Clear stale pairings that may block connection.
- Open System Settings, Bluetooth. Remove (forget) the device. On the Bluetooth device, put it in pairing mode—often a button hold for 5–10 seconds. Try pairing again.
- Good: The device appears in the list and pairs.
- Bad: If the device still does not appear, reset the Bluetooth module.
Reset Bluetooth module
Goal: Reset the Bluetooth controller and preferences.
- Option+click the Bluetooth icon in the menu bar. Select Debug, Reset the Bluetooth module. Or remove ~/Library/Preferences/com.apple.Bluetooth.plist and restart.
- Good: The Mac sees devices and can pair.
- Bad: If the Mac still does not see devices, reset SMC or call support.
When to get help
Call Apple or a technician if:
- The Mac does not see any Bluetooth devices.
- The device pairs with other computers but never with this Mac after reset and preference removal.
- Bluetooth will not turn on.
