Steps

Goal: Rule out storage and network, then clear cache and retry.

Check storage

Goal: Confirm enough free space for the update.

  • Apple menu, About This Mac, Storage. Confirm at least 15–20 GB free. Delete large files, empty Trash, use Optimize Storage if needed.
  • Good: Enough space. Proceed to Clear update cache if the update still fails.
  • Bad: Free more space. Updates need room to download and expand.

Clear update cache

Goal: Remove corrupted or stuck update data.

  • Terminal: sudo softwareupdate —clear-catalog. Restart. System Settings, General, Software Update. Try the update again.
  • Good: Update downloads and installs. Proceed to Verification.
  • Bad: Download the full installer from Apple or use Recovery (Command+R at boot).

When to get help

Call Apple or a technician if:

  • The update fails repeatedly after freeing space and clearing cache.
  • The Mac will not boot after an update.
  • Recovery or reinstall is needed.

Verification

  • macOS is up to date in System Settings, General, Software Update.
  • The Mac restarts and runs the new version.
  • No update errors or stalls.

Escalation ladder

  2. Quit apps and retry Quit heavy apps; try update again.
  3. Clear cache Delete update cache; restart; retry.
  4. Call a pro Update fails repeatedly; Recovery or reinstall needed.

You can change your answer later.

Clear update cache and retry

Terminal: sudo softwareupdate --clear-catalog. Restart. System Settings, Software Update. Try again. If still fails, download full installer from Apple or use Recovery.
