Fix mesh Wi‑Fi that will not connect
We'll check placement, power-cycle, sync the nodes, and get your mesh connected—or tell you when to escalate.
What you'll need
- Mesh system (main router + nodes)
- Mesh app (Google Home, Eero, Linksys, TP-Link Deco, etc.)
- Power outlets near the main router and node locations

Steps
Goal: Confirm the main router is online, place the node in range, and pair it.
- Check that the main router has power and the WAN/Internet light is on. Connect a device with Ethernet and open fast.com. Confirm you have internet.
- Good: Main router is online. Proceed to Placement.
- Bad: Main router is down—power-cycle it and fix that first.
Placement
Goal: Position the mesh node within range of the main router or another connected node.
- Place the node within 30–50 feet of the main router (or another node), with clear line of sight. Avoid thick walls, metal, and appliances.
- Good: Node is in range. Proceed to Pair and sync.
- Bad: Node is too far—move it closer before pairing.
Pair and sync
Goal: Add the node via the mesh app and wait for it to connect.
- Power-cycle the main router first (unplug 60 seconds, plug back in). Wait for it to be fully up. Then plug in the node.
- Open the mesh app (Google Home, Eero, Linksys, TP-Link Deco, etc.). Follow the steps to add a new node. The app will search for the node.
- Wait 2–5 minutes for sync. Do not unplug or move the node during this time.
- Good: The app shows the node as Connected. Proceed to Verification.
- Bad: Pairing failed—power-cycle the node, remove from app if listed, retry. Add nodes one at a time.
Reset
Goal: Reset the node when it will not pair.
- Hold the reset button on the node for 10–15 seconds until the light blinks. Remove the node from the app if it was previously added.
- Add it again as a new node. Confirm the app finds it and pairing completes.
- Good: Node connects. Bad: Still fails—capture model, placement, error message; contact manufacturer.
Verification
- The mesh app shows all nodes as Connected or Online.
- Devices can connect to the mesh network and get internet.
- Signal strength is good in areas where you added nodes.
Escalation ladder
Work from the device outward. Stop when the problem is fixed.
- Main router online Confirm the main router has internet; power-cycle if needed.
- Placement Place the node within 30–50 feet of the main router or another node.
- Pair and sync Use the mesh app to add the node; wait for sync.
- Reset node Reset the node and add it again as new.
- Escalate Capture model, placement, error messages; contact manufacturer.
What to capture if you need help
Before calling support or posting for help, have these ready. It speeds everything up.
- Mesh system model and firmware version
- Number of nodes and which ones are offline
- Distance between main router and node
- Error message in the mesh app (if any)
- Steps already tried
Is the main router online and has internet?
The main router must be up before nodes can connect.
You can change your answer later.
Fix the main router first
Is the node within 30–50 feet of the main router?
Weak signal prevents connection. Move the node closer if needed.
You can change your answer later.
Move the node closer
Did pairing in the app succeed?
Use the mesh app to add the node. Follow the in-app steps.
You can change your answer later.
Node connected
Reset the node and retry

Frequently asked questions
- How far apart should mesh nodes be?
- Typically 30–50 feet between nodes, with clear line of sight. Avoid thick walls, metal, and appliances. The node must get a strong signal from the main router or another node to connect.
- Why does my mesh node keep going offline?
- Usually placement—the node is too far or has obstacles. Move it closer to the main router or another node. Power-cycle the main router first, then the nodes. Check for firmware updates.
- Do I need to add nodes one at a time?
- Yes, for most mesh systems. Add the first node, wait for it to connect, then add the next. Adding multiple at once can cause pairing failures.
