Steps

Goal: Confirm the symptom, rule out child lock, then isolate the latch, switch, hinges, or gasket fault.

  • Press the open button or pull the door handle. If the door does not release, the latch, switch, or child lock may be at fault.
  • Symptom confirmed: The door will not open—proceed to Check child lock.
  • Different problem: The door opens but is hard to close—check hinges and gasket.

Check child lock

Goal: Rule out child lock before opening the microwave.

  • Look for a Lock or Child Lock indicator on the display. Hold the Cancel or Child Lock button for 3 seconds to disable.
  • When child lock is off, the lock icon should disappear and the door should open normally.
  • Good: Child lock was on—door opens after disabling. Bad: Child lock was off—proceed to Inspect latch and switch.

Inspect latch and switch

Goal: Find and fix a faulty latch mechanism or door switch. Unplug the microwave first.

  • Unplug the microwave from the wall outlet. Never operate with the door open.
  • Open the door as far as it will go. Look at the latch mechanism (hook on the door, strike on the cabinet). Check for bent, broken, or misaligned parts.
  • Locate the door switch near the door frame. It should depress when the door closes. A faulty switch can prevent the latch from releasing or—worse—allow the microwave to run with the door open.
  • If the latch is sticky but not broken, clean it with a dry cloth and apply a small amount of silicone grease. Do not use oil or petroleum products.
  • Good: You found and fixed the fault—the door opens and closes normally. Bad: The latch or switch is broken—replace it or call a technician. If the microwave runs with the door open, unplug immediately and call a technician.

Check hinges and gasket

Goal: Inspect hinges and gasket for wear or obstruction.

  • Check the hinges for wear, rust, or looseness. A bent hinge can bind the door.
  • Inspect the gasket around the door. If it is swollen, torn, or blocking the latch, the door may not close or open properly.
  • Replace worn hinges or a damaged gasket with matching parts.
  • Good: Hinges and gasket are fine—door opens and closes smoothly. Bad: Parts are worn or damaged—replace or call a pro.

When to get help

Unplug the microwave immediately if it runs with the door open. That indicates a failed door switch—a serious safety hazard. Do not use it until a technician repairs it.

Call an appliance technician if:

  • The microwave runs with the door open (door switch failure).
  • You have replaced the latch or switch and the door still will not open.
  • You are not comfortable working on the door assembly.

Verification

  • The door opens when you press the open button.
  • The door closes and latches securely.
  • Child lock (if used) can be enabled and disabled correctly.
  • The microwave does not run with the door open.

Escalation ladder

Work from the device outward. Stop when the problem is fixed.

  1. Confirm symptom Verify the door will not open; rule out user error or different problem.
  2. Child lock Disable child lock if enabled.
  3. Latch and switch Inspect and clean or replace the latch mechanism and door switch.
  4. Hinges and gasket Check hinges and gasket for wear or obstruction.
  5. Call a pro Microwave runs with door open—unplug, call technician. Broken parts you cannot replace—call a technician.
