Steps

Goal: Check the line connection, power-cycle, and splitters so the modem syncs.

  • Confirm the coax or phone line is firmly connected to the modem.
  • Power-cycle the modem (unplug 30 seconds, plug back in).
  • Check splitters and filters—DSL needs filters on phones; cable may need MoCA filter at entry.
  • Good: The modem syncs and the lights are solid. Bad: The modem still will not sync—call your ISP.

Connection check

Goal: Confirm the line is connected.

  • Check the coax or phone line at the modem. Loose connections prevent sync.
  • Good: Line connected. Bad: Loose—tighten and try again.

Power-cycle

Goal: Reset the modem.

  • Unplug the modem for 30 seconds. Plug it back in. Wait for it to attempt sync.
  • Good: Modem syncs. Bad: Still will not sync—check splitters or call ISP.

When to get help

Call your ISP if:

  • The modem still will not sync after checking connections and power-cycling.
  • They can check the line signal and may need to send a technician.

Verification

  • The modem sync or downstream/upstream lights are solid.
  • The modem has an IP from the ISP.
  • You have internet connectivity.

Escalation ladder

Work from the device outward. Stop when the problem is fixed.
