Steps

Goal: Confirm the device is in the parental control profile, check the block list and schedule, then verify the device is not bypassing controls (VPN, custom DNS, cellular).

  • Log into the router or parental control app. Confirm the device is in a profile that has restrictions. The block list and schedule must be set for that profile.
  • On the device, check for VPN or custom DNS—they bypass router controls. Disable them so the device uses the router.
  • Good: Device in profile, no VPN or custom DNS, on Wi‑Fi—controls should work. Bad: Device on cellular—router controls do not apply; use device or app controls.

Check profile

Goal: Confirm the device is in the correct parental control profile with the right restrictions.

  • Log into the router or parental control app. Open the device list and parental control profiles.
  • Confirm the device is assigned to a profile that has the block list and schedule you want.
  • Check the block list includes the sites or categories to block. Check the schedule—blocks may apply only at certain times.
  • Good: Device in profile, block list and schedule correct. Bad: Device not in profile or wrong settings—add device and fix settings.

Bypass check

Goal: Ensure the device is not bypassing router parental controls.

  • VPN encrypts traffic and routes it elsewhere—the router cannot filter it. Turn off VPN on the device.
  • Custom DNS (e.g. 8.8.8.8) bypasses router DNS filtering. Set DNS to automatic so the device uses the router.
  • Router controls only apply when the device is on Wi‑Fi. If the device is on cellular (phone with mobile data), use device-level controls (Screen Time, Family Link) or a third-party app.
  • Good: Device on Wi‑Fi, no VPN, DNS automatic. Bad: VPN on or custom DNS—disable them.

When to get help

If the parental control still will not block after re-adding the device and confirming no VPN or custom DNS, contact the router manufacturer. Have ready: router model, parental control settings, device type, and what you tried.

Verification

  • The device is in the parental control profile with the correct block list and schedule.
  • The device uses the router DNS (no VPN, no custom DNS).
  • Blocked sites do not load on the device when it is on Wi‑Fi.

Escalation ladder

Work from the device outward. Stop when the problem is fixed.

  1. Add device to profile Confirm the device is in the parental control profile.
  2. Check block list and schedule Verify block list and time schedule are correct.
  3. Disable VPN and custom DNS Ensure the device uses router DNS; no VPN.
  4. Re-add device Remove and re-add the device to the profile.
  5. Call support Manufacturer support with router model and steps tried.

What to capture if you need help

Before calling support or posting for help, have these ready. It speeds everything up.

  • Router model
  • Parental control profile and block list
  • Device type and whether it uses VPN or custom DNS
  • Whether the device is on Wi‑Fi or cellular
  • Steps already tried

Is the device in the parental control profile?

The device must be in a profile that has restrictions.

Log into the router or parental control app. Check the device list. Good: device is in a restricted profile. Bad: device is not assigned—add it to the correct profile.

You can change your answer later.

Add device to profile

Add the device to the parental control profile with the block list and schedule. Save. Retest from the device.

Are the block list and schedule correct?

Block list and time schedule must be set for that profile.

Open the profile settings. Confirm the block list includes the sites to block. Check the schedule—blocks may apply only at certain times. Good: block list and schedule are correct. Bad: wrong settings—fix and save.

You can change your answer later.

Fix block list and schedule

Update the block list and schedule in the profile. Save. Retest from the device.

Is the device using VPN or custom DNS?

VPN or custom DNS bypasses router parental controls.

On the device, check for VPN or custom DNS (e.g. 8.8.8.8). Good: no VPN, DNS automatic—router controls should work. Bad: VPN on or custom DNS—disable them so the device uses the router.

You can change your answer later.

Disable VPN and custom DNS

Turn off VPN and set DNS to automatic on the device. Retest. Router controls should now apply.

Is the device on cellular (not Wi‑Fi)?

Router controls only apply when the device is on Wi‑Fi.

If the device is on cellular (phone with mobile data), router controls do not apply. Use device-level controls (Screen Time, Family Link) or a third-party app for cellular. Good: device on Wi‑Fi—re-add to profile or restart router. Bad: device on cellular—need device or app controls.

You can change your answer later.

Use device or app controls for cellular

Router parental controls do not apply on cellular. Use Screen Time (iOS), Family Link (Android), or a third-party parental control app that works on cellular.

Re-add device and restart router

Remove the device from the profile and add it again. Power-cycle the router. Retest. If the parental control still will not block, call support.
