Fix a password that will not save
We'll enable the password manager, rule out private mode and extensions, then isolate the cause—site blocking, form type, or settings—or tell you when to use a standalone password manager.
What you'll need

Steps
Goal: Enable the password manager, rule out private mode and extensions, then isolate the cause.
- Open browser settings. Chrome: Settings > Passwords > Offer to save passwords. Firefox: Settings > Privacy > Logins and Passwords > Ask to save logins. Check that the option is on.
- Good: The option was off—turn it on and retry. Bad: It was already on—proceed to Private mode or extensions.
Private mode or extensions
Goal: Rule out private mode and extensions that block the save prompt.
- Check for the mask or private icon in the tab. Private/incognito windows do not save passwords. Use a normal window.
- Disable ad blockers, privacy tools, and other extensions. Retry logging in.
- Good: The save prompt appears when you use a normal window or disable an extension. Bad: Still no prompt—proceed to One site vs all sites.
One site vs all sites
Goal: Determine if one site blocks saving or the whole browser has an issue.
- Try logging in on a different site (e.g. a major site). Compare: does the save prompt appear there?
- Good: It works on other sites—the first site may block saving. Use a standalone password manager. Bad: No site shows the prompt—recheck settings, private mode, extensions; then escalate.
When to get help
If one site never offers to save, the site may use autocomplete=“off” or a non-standard form. Use Bitwarden, 1Password, or similar to store the password manually.
If no site saves passwords in any browser, capture: browser and version, OS, whether private mode was used, extensions, and steps tried. Contact browser support.
Verification
- The save prompt appears when you log in on a site that allows it.
- Passwords are stored in the browser password manager (Settings > Passwords).
- If you use sync, passwords appear on other signed-in devices.
Escalation ladder
Work from the device outward. Stop when the problem is fixed.
- Settings Enable Offer to save passwords in browser settings.
- Private mode Use a normal window; private/incognito does not save.
- Extensions Disable extensions that may block autofill; retry.
- Sync and storage Check sync is on; check disk space is available.
- Escalate or use standalone manager If one site blocks saving, use Bitwarden or 1Password. If all sites fail, contact browser support.

Frequently asked questions
- Why would a browser not save my password?
- Common causes: password save is disabled in settings, you are in private/incognito mode, an extension blocks autofill, the site blocks password saving, or sync is off. Check settings first, then try a normal window without extensions.
- Does incognito mode save passwords?
- No. Private or incognito windows do not save passwords. Use a normal window if you want the browser to remember the password.
- Can a website block password saving?
- Yes. Some sites use autocomplete="off" or non-standard form fields, which can prevent the browser from offering to save. Try a different browser to confirm; if it works there, the site may be blocking your usual browser.
