Steps

Goal: Confirm the symptom, rule out power and water level, then check the filter, impeller, and pump.

  • Confirm the fountain is plugged in and the pump runs (you hear a hum) but no water flows from the spout.
  • Good: Pump hums but no flow—proceed to Check power and water level.
  • Bad: Pump is silent—check power or the pump has failed. See When to get help.

Check power and water level

Goal: Rule out power loss and low water before opening the pump.

  • Verify the fountain is plugged in and the outlet works. Test the outlet with another device.
  • Check that the reservoir is filled to the minimum level and the pump is fully submerged. The pump cannot prime if the water level is too low.
  • Add water to the correct level and retest.
  • Good: Power on and water level correct. Proceed to Filter and impeller.
  • Bad: Outlet dead or water too low—fix those first.

Filter and impeller

Goal: Remove blockages from the filter and impeller.

  • Remove the filter. Inspect for debris, slime, or mineral buildup. Rinse or replace per manufacturer instructions.
  • Unplug the fountain. Remove the pump from the reservoir. Inspect the impeller (the spinning blade inside the pump) for hair, debris, or mineral buildup.
  • Clean the impeller with a soft brush and water. If mineral buildup is heavy, soak the pump housing in white vinegar for 1–2 hours before rinsing.
  • Reassemble the pump and test.
  • Good: Filter and impeller clean. Water flows.
  • Bad: Pump hums but still no flow—replace the pump.

Replace pump

Goal: Install a new pump if the old one is faulty.

  • Order a replacement pump from the manufacturer or an appliance parts supplier (match the pump model number).
  • Disconnect the old pump and install the new one. Follow the manufacturer instructions for your model.
  • Good: Water flows after replacement.
  • Bad: New pump still does not run—check power or call a pro.

When to get help

Call an appliance technician if:

  • The pump does not run at all and you have confirmed power and a working outlet.
  • You suspect an electrical fault or wiring issue.
  • You are not comfortable working with electrical parts.

Most pet fountain pump issues are DIY fixable with cleaning or pump replacement.

Verification

  • Water flows from the spout or stream when the fountain is on.
  • The pump hums steadily and the water level stays stable.
  • Filter is clean and the impeller spins freely.
  • No unusual noise or grinding from the pump.

Escalation ladder

Work from the device outward. Stop when the problem is fixed.

  1. Confirm symptom Verify the fountain has no water flow; rule out a different problem.
  2. Power and water level Check outlet, power adapter, and that the pump is fully submerged.
  3. Filter and impeller Clean or replace the filter; clean the impeller and remove mineral buildup.
  4. Replace pump Replace the pump if it is silent or does not move water after cleaning.
  5. Call a pro Pump does not run with power confirmed, or electrical fault suspected.

What to capture if you need help

Before calling support or posting for help, have these ready. It speeds everything up.

  • Whether the pump hums or is silent
  • Water level at time of issue
  • Filter condition (clean or clogged)
  • Impeller condition (debris, mineral buildup)
  • Steps already tried

Does the fountain have power but no water flow?

Check that the fountain is plugged in and the pump runs (you hear a hum) but no water flows from the spout.

Confirm the fountain is plugged in. Listen for the pump hum. If the pump hums but no water flows, the pump is blocked or worn. If the pump is silent, power or the pump has failed. Good: pump hums but no flow—proceed. Bad: pump silent—check power first.

You can change your answer later.

Is power confirmed and the water level above the pump?

The pump must be fully submerged. Check the outlet and water level.

Verify the outlet works. Test with another device. Check that the reservoir is filled to the minimum level and the pump is fully submerged. Good: power on and water level correct. Bad: outlet dead or water too low—fix those first.

You can change your answer later.

Is the filter clean?

A clogged filter blocks flow. Remove and inspect the filter.

Remove the filter. Inspect for debris, slime, or mineral buildup. Rinse or replace per manufacturer instructions. Good: filter clean and reinstalled. Bad: filter very dirty—clean or replace, then retest.

You can change your answer later.

Clean filter and retest

Clean or replace the filter. Reinstall and retest. If water flows, the filter was the cause. If not, proceed to check the impeller.

Is the impeller free of debris and mineral buildup?

The impeller spins inside the pump. Debris or mineral buildup can block it.

Unplug the fountain. Remove the pump. Inspect the impeller for hair, debris, or mineral buildup. Clean with a soft brush. Soak in vinegar if mineral buildup is heavy. Good: impeller clean and spins freely. Bad: impeller still blocked or worn—replace pump.

You can change your answer later.

Clean impeller and retest

Clean the impeller and pump housing. Remove mineral buildup with vinegar if needed. Reassemble and test. If water flows, the impeller was the cause. If the pump hums but still no flow, replace the pump.

Does the pump move water after cleaning?

Run the fountain. If water flows, the issue is resolved. If the pump hums but still no flow, the pump may be worn or damaged—replace it.

Call a pro

Call an appliance technician if the pump does not run at all and you have confirmed power and a working outlet, if you suspect an electrical fault, or if you are not comfortable working with electrical parts.

Frequently asked questions

Why would a pet fountain stop pumping?
Common causes: low water level (pump must be submerged), clogged filter, debris or mineral buildup on the impeller, or a worn or damaged pump. Check water level and filter first, then clean the pump and impeller.
Can I fix a pet fountain that will not pump myself?
Yes, for most causes. You can clean the filter, impeller, and pump housing; remove mineral buildup with vinegar; and replace the pump if it is faulty. Pet fountain pumps are usually low-voltage and easy to swap.
When should I call a technician for a pet fountain that will not pump?
Call a pro if the pump does not run at all and power is confirmed, if you suspect an electrical fault or wiring issue, or if you are not comfortable working with electrical parts. Most pump issues are DIY fixable.
