Steps
Goal: Free storage, install updates, and reduce background load to improve performance.
- Check storage. If under 1–2 GB free, the phone will slow down.
- Good: At least 1–2 GB free. Proceed to Install updates.
- Bad: Free storage first—delete apps, photos, cached data.
Check storage
Goal: Confirm adequate free space.
- Open Settings, Storage (or iPhone Storage). Delete unused apps, photos, videos. Clear app caches. Empty recently deleted. Aim for at least 1–2 GB free.
- Good: Storage freed. Restart and test.
- Bad: Continue freeing space or proceed to updates.
Install updates
Goal: Confirm the OS is up to date.
- Settings, General, Software Update (iPhone) or Settings, System, Software update (Android). Install any pending updates. Restart after updating.
- Good: System up to date. Proceed to Close apps and clear caches.
- Bad: Install updates first—outdated OS can cause lag.
Close apps and clear caches
Goal: Reduce memory and cache usage.
- Close background apps from the app switcher. Settings, Apps—clear cache for heavy apps. Uninstall unused apps.
- Good: Fewer apps and caches cleared. Force restart.
- Bad: Close apps and clear caches before restarting.
When to get help
Call a technician if:
- Factory reset does not help.
- The phone has adequate storage but is still slow.
- The device is several years old and may need replacement.
Verification
- At least 1–2 GB free storage.
- OS is up to date.
- Fewer background apps and cleared caches.
- Phone feels more responsive after restart.
Escalation ladder
Work from the device outward. Stop when the problem is fixed.
